Obituary

On a bright Saturday, April 8, 1950, on the island of
Turks and Caicos, a beautiful, bouncing baby girl was born to Velina Palmer Gray and William Gray, and they named her Alva C. Gray.

Alva grew up on the island of Turks during her early ages of childhood, and then, at the age of 11, she migrated to Nassau, Bahamas, where she completed her schooling. She worked at Princess Margaret Hospital as a nursing assistant and during this time she became an Eastern Star. Alva became a traveling Evangelist where she traveled throughout the Bahamas spreading the word of God.

During her early adulthood, she moved to Freeport, Bahamas, where she settled and where she met the love of her life, Wellington Ferguson, in the 1970’s. They started their family of 6. Alva and Wellington decided to move their family over to the United States where her and Wellington completed their union and welcomed their final addition to the family, a baby boy. Alva then started her own ministry from home where she had services every Sunday and gave God his praises. She also worked as a housekeeper for a number of years, and she later retired from Miami Dade County Public Schools as a dietician.

Alva was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was very loveable and joy to be around. Her personality was unforgettable, and she loved everyone unconditionally; to know her was to love her. Alva loved the Lord with her whole entire heart, she enjoyed reading her bible, especially with Wellington. Alva was a prayer warrior and prayed in and out of season, even in her final days as she transitioned into the arms of the Lord on the morning of October 20, 2023.

Alva leaves to cherish her loving memories: her husband, Wellington Ferguson; five children, Gloria Spence, Edward Gray (Bernette Gray), Sherele Biggs (Charlton Biggs), Csonka Ferguson, and Odriscoll Ferguson; grandchildren, Yspilanti Walker, Daiquette Spence, Derrick Spence, Jr., Valencia Penn, Dasia Gibson, Derri-ann Spence, Kenyata Ferguson (deceased), Nylah Ferguson (deceased), Teelin Ferguson, Malia Ferguson, Maya Gibson, Carlissa Biggs, and Charlotte Kruzel; great-grandchildren, Danny Smith, Jr., Ma’Kayla Walker, Destiny Denmark, Dai’Yanny Smith, Dai’Cyon Smith, Heavenly Walker (deceased), Brooklyn Losse, Angel Spence, and Derrick Spence; godchildren, Eva Mitchell, Bridget Missick, Michelle Johnson, Jeramine Gray, Errol Leandre, Jr.; deceased siblings, Johnathan Gray, Gerald Gray, Henry Gray, Walter Gray, Leroy Gray, Albert Gray, Sr., Timothy Gray (Clark), Eva Ferguson; living siblings, Harold Gray, James Gray, Mabel Leandre, Mila Gray, Olma Roberts; in addition to many nieces, nephews, cousins, and many associates.
