Obituary
Bernard Mcgahee was born on December 22, 1951, in Miami, Florida, to the late Willis Andrew McGahee, Sr., and Louise Holmes McGahee. He was the sixth of ten children blessed to their union.
Educated in the Dade County Public Schools, Bernard moved with his family in 1962 from South Miami to Coconut Grove—a place that would forever be his home. It was in the Grove that he grew up, built strong friendships, and became a beloved figure in the community.
Known affectionately as “Blake,” he was a true Grove legend. He had a way of making everyone feel like family, earning him the title of “Unc” to many. Whether he was walking through the neighborhood, riding his bike, catching a football or basketball game, or spending time at his favorite spot, Fat Tuesday, in Cocowalk. Bernard was a familiar and treasured presence. He lived simply but fully, with a heart that held deep love for his family, his friends, and the community that embraced him. His laughter was contagious, and he never missed a moment to brag about the people he loved.
Bernard was raised in a Christian home and carried a quiet understanding that his strength came from the Lord. He fought hard through his challenges, proving the doctors wrong on several occasions. And in the end, he left this world on his own terms—just as he had lived. In his final months, he made peace with his Creator, professing his faith in Jesus Christ and accepting Him as his Lord and Savior.
In the early morning hours of March 6, 2025, at Miami Jewish Health, Bernard answered God’s call to eternal rest. Though he will be missed and is no longer with us in body, his love, joy, and unwavering spirit will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
“I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” — Psalm 121:1-2
Bernard leaves to cherish his memory, his loving: son, Francois McGahee Nolton, (Glenda); daughter, Tiera King; sisters, Annie Smith and Andrea Watkins; brothers, Willis McGahee, Jr. (Angie), Ronald McGahee and Rodney McGahee; brother-in-law, Mitchell Butler, Jr.; nine grandchildren, Francois Jr., Franchiell, Francisko, Frantasia, Fernard, Fran’nasia, Frankasia, Fernara, and Legend; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins who loved him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Helen Butler, Ellen Saunders, Regina McGahee, and Cynthia McGahee; and his niece Dedra Smith.
