Obituary
Bobby Lewis Hopkins was born in Miami, Florida, on July 19, 1962. The fourth of five children born to the parents of William Hoover Hopkins and Annie Bell Hopkins. He was known as “Uncle Bob” to most and just “Bob” to others. He will forever be remembered for his wonderful smile, great humor, infectious personality, and the love for his family. Bobby graduated from Miami Northwestern Senior High School and was a proud Bull from the class of 1980. During his time in high school, he loved sports and was involved in both football and track. He attended Central State University to play football and to pursue a bachelor’s degree but shortly returned to Miami to help take care of the family.
Bobby really enjoyed working with the youth and retired with 32 years of service at Miami Central High School as a beloved security officer and community staple. He spent many years talking, guiding, counseling, and disciplining youth, and he really believed that they were the future. He also worked several years as a juvenile detention officer for the Justice Center. His final employment was at the Frost Museum of Science for five years. The generations he has influenced over the years cannot be counted but will be remembered for many years to come. While juggling his career, he made time to also raise his five nieces and nephew. He was always so kind and treated each of them with graciousness by stepping into the role of their father when there was none. His philosophy that he instilled was “all we got is family… family over everything.” His words will continue to reign in our hearts.
Nothing compares to the unshakable relationship he shared with his brother, Derrick. He was considered a “fitness fanatic” in earlier years. Daily visits to the gym to lift weights with his brother, Derrick, was a habit in which he took great pride in. The many memories of watching Raiders football, listening to classics, drinking, and long conversations will always warm the heart in a meaningful way. Bobby loved his brother to the ends of the earth and would do anything to make sure their bond was unbreakable. He always vowed to be there for his brother.
Bobby was preceded in death by his parents; brother,Karl Hopkins; and sisters, Brenda Robinson and Vivian Hopkins.
He is survived by his brother, Derrick Hopkins; fiancée, Kimberly Jefferson, who will always hold a special place in Bobby’s heart as the pair were set to wed next year; loving nieces and nephews, Shamicka Robinson, Shakienna Blackshear (Ron Blackshear), Shalena Jackson (Victor Jackson), Lonzo Robinson (Nicola Robinson), Belinda Duclos (Rodlet Duclos), Derrick Hopkins II, and Angel Josephs (Odane Josephs); loving grandnieces and nephews, Jai’len Robinson (Kanisha Robinson), Dammonn, Vashia, Tatiana, Ronniya, Ariana, Odin, and Aiden; great-great-grandniece and nephew, Kamora and Kasmir Robinson; cousins, Anita Ellis, Dorothy, Marcus, and Michael Lee, Chiquitta Lee, Andre Jr., Andrew, and Adrin Ellis, and Marcus Jr., Keshawn and Jayden Lee. Bobby also leaves behind a host of friends and other extended family who loved and supported him throughout the different stages of his life. He will be dearly missed.
