Obituary

God, in His ultimate timing, chose to fill an empty space in His heavenly flower garden on February 22nd, 2025. He searched out His weary daughter, wrapped His arms of love around her, and lifted her to rest. We find comfort in God’s decision because He chooses only the best!

Cassandra McLeroy was born on June 28th, 1950, to Johnny Benyard and Bertha Prater.  She was the second-born of her mother’s four children and was preceded in death by her father, Johnny Benyard, and her beloved sister, Amanda McMath. Cassandra was raised in church and in her early years, received Jesus Christ as her personal savior while a member of St. James A.M.E. church, Miami, Florida.

Cassandra received her education in the Miami Dade County Public School System and was a proud graduate of Miami Northwestern Senior High School Class of 1968. In 1969, she was united in holy matrimony to Caery McLeroy, and from that union, one son, Terrence McLeroy, was born. Although their marriage ended, the lasting love of friendship continued. Seven years later, she welcomed her next bundle of joy, Charles Callender Jr., into her beautiful family.

Cassandra always kept herself productively busy and served faithfully in the Miami Dade County Public School System, retiring in 2016 after 42 years as a paraprofessional. She placed great value on education, and her love and respect for it were evident to all the young people in her personal and professional life. For those who listened to her wise and caring counsel, their lives are forever impacted by the rewards of honoring her guidance.

Cassandra lived a simple life, yet she always radiated style and grace. She was certain to be found adorned in beautiful fashion, chic hairstyles, and lovely aromas that elegantly graced the room-just as her presence did. She cherished time with family and friends and was ever willing to lend her hand, her ear, and her heart where needed. Her sons often serenaded her to The Spinners’ 1974 tune, “Sweet Sadie”, substituting “Sadie” with “Sandy”, a tribute to their dedicated and loving mother. She was a true queen, with a heart of gold, absolutely adored by all who knew her.

Cassandra leaves to mourn, her two sons: Johnaphon (Raquel) King Jr. and Charles Callender Jr.; a very special niece, Keandra Carter, who blossomed into the daughter she requested from God; her grandchildren: Krisma, Armoni, and Victoria King, Charles Callender III, Jeriel Callender, Charnai, Ciani, and Chaz Callender; one great-grandson, Jahlil Callender; her dear mother, Bertha McMath; two maternal brothers, Larry Wilcox and Willis (Joann) McMath; paternal siblings, and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

Though Cassandra’s physical presence will be deeply missed, her legacy of love, wisdom, and kindness will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.

Rest in peace, Sweet Sandy. You are forever in our hearts.
