Obituary
Charlene Thurman was born on September 1, 1953, in Miami, Florida to Charlie McCall and Thelma Holmes McCall, their pride and joy and only child.
Charlene was raised in Liberty City. Charlene was a scholarly student who fancied attending school. She received her education through the Miami Dade County public school system at Randolph Kindergarten, Poinciana Park, Dorsey Jr. High School, and graduated from Miami Northwestern Sr. High School (Home of the Mighty Bulls), Class of 1971. Charlene furthered her educational endeavors at Florida Agricultural Mechanical University (FAMU). She pledged as Delta Sigma Theta; she knew early on that she wanted to have a positive impact in this world.
Shortly after graduating, Charlene went on to work at Miami Dade Community College as a Financial Aide Advisor. She continued with her education and received her Associate’s Degree in Education. Charlene attended St. James AME. In 1994, Charlene joined New Birth Baptist Church under the leadership of Bishop Victor Curry. Charlene was part of the sign language, Choir, and New Member Orientation Ministries. She became a Deaconess in 1998, and she remained as a faithful member. Charlene worked for Florida Power and Lights for 20 years and Flagler Dog Track for 24 years.
Charlene enjoyed the simple things in life, she was a dedicated and devoted mother and grandmother to her six children and grandchildren. She was a hands-on mother. Not only did she love her children and grandchildren, she also loved her church.
On Monday, December 11, 2023, Charlene’s Heavenly Father called her home. She is preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Thelma McCall; bonus, Tyra G.; and son, Charles McCall.
Charlene leaves to cherish lasting memories: her children, Thelma, Monique Simpkins, Anthony, Anthonett, and Andraina Nelson; one bonus child, Terrance S.; 24 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren; Charlene’s lifetime partner, Michael Daniels; cousins, Anita A., Renard A., and Patricia K.; close friends, Justine F. Cynthia and Ms. Dorthy; and a host of other family and friends.
