Obituary
Charles Dwight Wayne Higgs was born on April 19th, 1950 in Miami, Florida. Charles was born to Early Mae Allen and James Marshall. CHarles was the eldest of five siblings.
Charles was known as “Dwight” to family and “Wolfman” to friends. Charles was raised in Liberty City by his grandparents, James and Ethel Higgs. His grandparents played a huge role in his life, being the first grandchild they had. They taught him many important core values that enabled him to be such an amazing man that he was well known for today. Charles attended and graduated from Miami Jackson Sr. High School (the Generals) apart of the class of 1968. While at Jackson, he signed up to join the Air Force at the young age of 15. He knew early on that he wanted to have a positive impact on this world.
Shortly after graduating, Charles went on to serve in the Air Force. Charles’s job in the Air Force was a Jet engine mechanic. He enjoyed his job, as he would fix jets in places he had never been to before. He served in the Vietnam War where he earned medals (NDSM, VSM, RVCM) for his service. He was honorably discharged in 1971, then he returned to his favorite place in the world, Miami, Florida (Liberty City). After returning from the war, Charles went back to school to study air conditioning and refrigeration and working for Florida Gas Company for a short period of time. Charles finally settled down to work at the United States Postal Office (branch 1071) for 16 years before retiring to work with his disability of blindness.
Into retirement, Charles went on to be a volunteer at the VA Hospital to do what he loves the most “to help others” as an information officer. Charles would walk the halls of the VA hospital daily, assisting other veterans by directing them to the places they needed to go, answering questions, and just being a positive aspect of the veteran community to raise their spirits. VA employees would say “Charles is the face of the Miami VA.” He would say to people that “ The best thing about going to the military was getting out alive because the VA really take care of you.” Charles was a member of VFW Post 471. Charles was a giver his whole life. His life was about how he can give or help the next person. He always wanted to be someone that everyone could count on. If you ask him for something he would give It to you, even if it was his last. He always felt that maybe you needed it more than he did. He would always tell people that he loves them. Charles would walk around passing out candy and letting all the ladies know that they were beautiful, and he was blind (lol). He was just a guy who loved to help, whether it was giving money, advice, knowledge, laughter, food, or his time, he was just that type of person.
The Lord called Charles back home in the early afternoon of October 16, 2023. Charles is preceded in death by his grandparents, James and Ethel Higgs; mother, Early Mae Allen; father, James Marshall; siblings, Cassandra, Bruce, and Eleanor.
Charles leaves to cherish lasting memories, his children, Charles Higgs, Jr. And Chauncye (Jerome) Brown; brother, Edward; grandchildren, Charles Higgs III (Alika and Ayden Higgs), Jerome Brown, Ky’shawn Brown, and Joshua Brown; brother, Edward Johnson; aunties, Edith Beauchard and Katherine Higgs; nieces and nephews, Paul Corey Stewart, Tamika Williams, Kristinia Strong, and Nicholas Williams; beloved, Annette; a strong circle of support, Donal, Amy, William, Skip,, and a host of family and close friends.
