Obituary

Cherylann Albright-Carter, lovingly known as “Cher” was born in Manhattan, New York City on August 11, 1952, to the loving parents of Laurene Lottie Hutchinson and Clarence Delacey Albright. She was raised in a Christian home, and her life centered around medicine, ministry, and music. Her grandmother, Rona Hutchinson being a Baptist Elder, mother being a charge nurse at Mount Sani Hospital, and her father being a musician in the infamous Lionel Hampton’s band.

In 1966 her family relocated to Miami, Florida where Cheryl received her secondary education at Miami Carol City Senior High. She met and married her high school sweetheart, Willie Tyrone Kelly.

Their union was blessed with a daughter, Shannon Gaziell Kelly.

They later divorced in in 1971.

Cheryl decided to further her education at Miami Dade Community College. Eventually relocating to Roanoke, Virginia where she met and married, Joseph McKinley Carter. This union was blessed with another daughter, Opia Zenia Carter.

Cheryl’s work ethic, dedication, and medical background were catalyst for her career achievements. She became an Undercover Agent, exposing elderly abuse and exploitation in various facilities.

Next, a dental technician working in a lab making dental Prosthetics and obtaining her CDL License to become a truck driver.

Lastly, Cheryl even took on the challenge of Construction!

Sometimes being the only women on the construction crew!

To say she was fearless is putting it mildly.

She was widely admired by all that knew her, and we affectionately called her “Queen or GrandDiva” because she was rarely seen without her signature heels and makeup.

Retirement afforded Cheryl the opportunity to get involved in her community, Saratoga Social Club, and enjoy dancing, reading, and loving on her family and friends. Always lending a helping hand. She was also a proud political activist, serving as an Election Day poll worker for the last 16 years.

She was preceeded in death by her parents Laurene and Clarence Albright, as well as her 1st husband, Willie T. Kelly. She leaves to mourn her passing: two daughters, Shannon Kelly-Stephens and Opia Astwood, a son-in-law, George Lehrman Astwood, five grandchildren: Venice Newton, Jiael Astwood, Jada Astwood, Joshua Astwood and Shawn Riley, one great-grand son, Chase Latimore, her 2nd husband Joseph McKinley Carter, as well as a host of cousins, extended family, friends, and neighbors.
