Obituary

Prelude
The harmonious musical composition of Daniel Foulkes’ life began on April 17, 1946 in Manhattan, New York where he was born to Doris Inez Foulkes and William Hadley. Though he was elder of two children born to this union, Daniel was raised with 6 uncles and aunts as his mother assumed responsibility for her younger siblings. Their house was often full of love, creating a lifetime of memories that would warm their hearts for years to come.
Overture
The rhythm of his life began to take form as Daniel, also known as “Dan” or “Danny”, received his early childhood education with Christian education at Bethany Academy. Then, he went on to graduate from Miami Northwestern Senior High (“Home of the BULLS”) with the Class of 1964. Following high school graduation, Danny joined the United States Army as a Medic and was honorably discharged in 1974. He continued to break down walls and push through barriers, becoming the first in his family to attend college. He studied at Miami-Dade College and Oakwood College, earning an A.S. degree in Respiratory Technology. He obtained gainful employment as a Hospital Orderly. Throughout his career, Daniel would complete courses to earn various certifications to hone his craft. Eventually, he would move up the ranks to become the Night Shift Manager of the Respiratory Department at North Shore Medical Center, where he was a dedicated employee until retiring in 2010.
Harmony
Daniel lived his life in the key of love, and he created a lovely family who would follow suit. He married the love of his life, Kathryn, on April 28, 1974. The fruits of this blissful union are Danielle and Matthew, whom he would also dedicate to God’s service. This lovely family of four would create an incredible existence filled with love. In times of joy, sadness, health, sickness, there was always love evident in his encounters with everyone. It was the magnetic force that fostered lasting friendships with many people throughout his life.
Magna Opus
The chords of Daniel’s life rang out in beautiful harmony as he was a devoted member in the Seventh-Day Adventist church and a fierce advocate of Christian education. A lifelong member of the Bethany Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Daniel served in several capacities as Home and School Leader, Adventist Men Leader, and Church Board member.
Not only did he see to it that his children obtained a Christian education. He was also instrumental in helping to raise funds for Miami Union Academy (MUA), volunteering his spare time to provide items and manage the famous “Snack Shop” at Miami Union Academy. Daniel gifted Miami Union Academy with another one of his life’s passions—photography. He photographed each graduating class and its individual members. Then, he would make the pictures available to each student for lasting memories. These class portraits would also be framed to grace the halls of Miami Union Academy. For his dedication to both Bethany AND Miami Union Academy, Daniel was often honored, receiving numerous awards and accolades for his significant contributions.
Coloratura
He found absolute delight in utilizing his God-given talents to edify God’s church. After family, MUSIC is what brought Dan immense joy! One thing that everyone knows is that Dan Foulkes had a profound love for music. Dan Foulkes fell in love with music at a very young age and started his first quartet, The Episodes, at the age of 14 or 15. While studying at Oakwood, he counted music among his extracurricular activities, singing in a quartet. Dan loved music so much that not only did he sing it, but he began to teach it. When he would recruit voices and they would say that they couldn’t sing, he would say, “Don’t worry about that. I can teach you.” He would work with them and work with them until their voices blended in with the choir (or were drowned out by the other voices). He enjoyed sharing his musical expertise with those willing to learn. Over the years, he assembled and directed several musical quartets, male chorus’, youth choirs, federation choirs, and cantata choirs, with the South Florida Cantata Choir being his last musical endeavor. Anyone and everyone were welcome to learn and sing praises to God and become a part of the choir, regardless of age, background or church affiliation (or lack thereof). He made room for everyone to participate in blending their voices in the highest praises to the Almighty.

In his lifetime, Dan Foulkes fulfilled many roles, and although this does not begin to scratch the surface of all the great things he has done in his life, it does give an understanding as to why so many people loved him. During the Easter and Christmas seasons of each year, Dan would assemble voices for the South Florida Cantata Choir and prepare musical presentations to perform at various churches throughout South Florida. While he believed in blessing the hearts of people with the gospel of Jesus Christ in song, Dan also encouraged a sense of community among the members of the cantata choir. Through a concerted effort on behalf of the choir members, Dan would collect donated food items that would be compiled into gift baskets and presented to families in need in each congregation at the conclusion of the cantata presentations.
Under his phenomenal leadership, the members of the cantata choir forged lifelong friendships cultivated by choir activities such as the annual choir picnics and luncheons. In weeks leading up to each season of cantata presentations, Daniel would plan the well-attended Agape Feast for the choir members, consecrating them before the Lord and fellowshipping over scrumptious meals lovingly prepared by the Glenn family.
Forte
His tenacity served him well in life. Despite life’s challenges, his spirit remained unwavering. He enjoyed the company of loved ones and was always ready for a good laugh. Remembered for his belief in giving God the very BEST, Dan was often known to be “tough” on singers if he felt they were not putting forth their best effort during choir rehearsals. If you have ever sang under his direction, you already know what his toughness meant. However, his operating principle was rooted in love—for others AND for God.
Coda

He now rests from all labor and awaits the call of His Loving Master, bidding him to come forth at the sound of the first trump and to enter into the eternal joy of life. In that moment, Daniel will once again unite loved ones under his direction of the Heavenly Choir, whose voices will transcend all time and space to ring everlasting anthems of exaltation our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
