Obituary
David Michael Payne was born on February 11, 1964, to the late Joseph Wiley Payne and Celia Brown Payne McCullar. He was the second oldest of three siblings. David held a deep admiration for his late stepfather, Artis McCullar. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Anthony Paul Payne and Calvin Eugene Payne.
Born and raised in Miami, Florida, David accepted Christ at a young age. He received his education in Miami and later worked as a custodian with Miami-Dade County.
To his family and many friends, David was affectionately known as Michael or Mike. He was a beacon of joy, radiating happiness and positivity. He embraced life with a “happy-go-lucky” spirit, always encouraging those around him to “Just Be Happy.” His close bond with his 55th Street family reflected his sincere sense of brotherhood.
In March 1999, David married Michelle Johnson and became a loving presence in the lives of her children-Michael, Marcus, Maurice, and Tanise. Though the marriage eventually ended, Mike remained a positive and supportive figure, maintaining friendly communication with Michelle and the children.
In October 2007, David moved to Newport News, Virginia, embracing a new beginning-a decision he often described as one of the best he had ever made. He began working as a custodian at Riverside Regional Health Center, where he built meaningful relationships. On June 25, 2018, he met his fiancee, Deadre Johnson, and was warmly welcomed by her father, Eugene Johnson, their extended family, and his sister-in-law Donna’s family. Due to health challenges, he retired from Riverside Regional Health Center in April 2023. David found spiritual fulfillment at Carver Memorial Presbyterian Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Brian Wells.
On Monday, February 24, 2025, God called David from his earthly home and welcomed his spirit into His eternal resting place.
Michael is survived by his fiancee, Deadre Johnson of Newport News, VA; his sister, Deborah Payne Hobbs (Clinton) of Miami, FL; and his sister-in-law, Donna Payne of Newport News, VA. He leaves behind four nieces: Shauntea Powell (JP) of Gastonia, NC; Latoya Payne of Atlanta, GA; Denise Barham (John) of Newport News, VA; and Dionne Grant (John) of Atlanta, GA, as well as five grandnieces, two grandnephews, and one great-grandnephew. He is also survived by his uncle, Charles Brown of Savannah, GA; three aunts: Zella Watson and Jeannette Howard of Savannah, GA, and Madeline Braleski of San Diego, CA; and his special sister-in-law, Margaret Payne. Michael leaves behind a loving family and a host of cherished friends.
David Michael (Mike) Payne loved deeply and was deeply loved in return. His joyful spirit and kind heart will be cherished forever.
