Obituary

Edward “Sarge” Young, Jr., was born on May 5, 1948, in Savannah, Georgia, to the late Edward Howard Young, Sr., and Inez Elizabeth Moore. He was the oldest of four children, three brothers, Eugene Young, Tyrone Young, and Anthony Young. He moved to Florida in middle school and was raised in Overtown. Edward proudly attended Booker T. Washington High School where his love for the colors of Orange and Black began. He also played football as a running back. High school is also where he earned the nickname, “Sarge.” Through high school and football, he forged friendships on and off the field that continued well into adulthood.

While attending a holiday function, he was introduced to Louise Ckark by mutual friends and stated that he knew he met the love of his life. They wed on August 2, 1980, after dating for a couple of years and had a loving marriage for 43 years. Edward worked for many years as an educator at Orchard Villa Elementary School where he impacted many young lives. His love for educating and giving overflowed into his everyday life. He loved to serve God. He was a deacon and on several committees at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church. Edward’s love for football and Booker T. Washington High School spilled over into adulthood. He was on several committees within the Alumni Athletic Club, constantly serving his community all while never missing a football game. He quite literally “bled” orange and black.

Edward will be greatly missed and remembered by his sons, Dormain Young, Sr., and Edward Young III; brother, Anthony Young (Betty); grandchildren, Brittney, Dormain Jr., and Desmond; nephews, Charlton Young (Carolyn), Eugene Young, Jr. (Mahagony), and Arcolia; sisters-in-law, Gloria Young, Emerald Tiggett, and Ellen Clark; and many grandnieces and nephews.
