Obituary

On August 4, 1943, in Mobile, Alabama, Ruth Octavia Porter and Joseph Davis, Jr., welcomed Eliza Catherine Davis, their fourth child of six siblings. She was a bright and intelligent young woman who excelled in high school, but faith would lead her to meet her soulmate Jessie Nix and they would create a life of marital bliss that created four children of their own, Jessie Nix, Priscilla Ann Nix, Louis Alexander Nix, and Chandra Elise Nunez.

She was raised by her maternal grandmother up until her mother sent for her to live with her in Miami, Florida, where she attended Booker T. Washington Senior High School. She met her husband Jessie Nix, and they got permission to be married from their parents and began a marriage for 58 years until her husband died on June 25, 2018. Judy, which she was called by family and friends, was a devoted mother and a great disciplinarian who pushed her children to higher learning for success in their lives, and she emphasized the importance of prayer and God in our lives. She also influenced her kids to have a good work ethic by example because she also worked off and on. She was a stay-at-home Mom who loved to bake different cakes and pies for her kids and family. She also was a sports fan; football was her favorite sport, but she loved to watch other areas of sports. She also was a vivid music lover who educated her children on good music. We would watch Soul Train every Saturday morning until it stopped. She also loved to fish and she did this activity with her kids. She was responsible for having picnics at the parks as a family outing.

Although her siblings were living in different states, she would keep in touch with each one of them by phone conversations and exchanging pictures of each of their families. She loved to dance, and on weekends she would turn on WEDR radio station. She liked to go to the movies and this would be a tradition for us to the movie on weekends. We had the best Thanksgivings and Christmases because of her loving touch in every detail.

Eliza Catherine Nix was a devoted wife, an awesome mom, sister, aunt, and a devoted grandmother and great friend to who ever was in her presence. She will be truly missed by her four children, Jessie Nix, Priscilla Ann Nix, Louis Alexander Nix, and Chandra Elise Nix; two grandchildren, Louis Nix, Jr., and Ronquerre Terry Cleveland; siblings, Margaret Agnew of Alabama, the late Louise of California, the late Joseph Davis of Chicago, Nathaniel Davis of Miami, the late Jimmie Lee Davis of California; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, neighbors, and friends.
