Obituary
Elizabeth Dukes Poingsett was born on January 12, 1937, in Palatka, Florida, to the late Ernest Dukes and Lottie Sherman Dukes. Liz, as she was affectionately known, was the fourth of five children. She was educated in the Putnam County schools.
Upon graduation from Central Academy High School, Liz moved to Miami, Florida, to live with her sister, Gladys Brown. She lived in Miami for a few years before moving on to her dream place, California. Liz decided to attend nursing school there and was afforded an opportunity to work and live in various cities, including Los Angeles, Sacramento, and Oakland.
California was also where she met and married the love of her life, Carl Poingsett. They spent many years traveling and dancing together. Later, Liz and Carl relocated to Miami. They remained married until his death.
Liz was a loving and devoted person to her many nieces and nephews, as well as other family and friends. When help came knocking on her door, Liz stepped in and raised her great-nieces and nephew, Valencia Jefferson, Kevin Fewquay, and Lawanda “Keisha” Fewquay.
In addition to her parents and husband, Elizabeth was preceded in death by her brother, James Dukes, and sisters, Gladys Brown and Maude Logan.
She leaves behind to mourn: her brother, Joe Dukes; sister, Shirley Middleton; stepchildren, Carl Poignsett, Jr. (Katie), Jerome Poignsett, and Daphne Poingsett-Dunn (Larry); nieces and nephews, William Brown, Sr., Emerson Brown, Bobby Stevens, Debbie Jackson, Terrence Odum, Bridgette Dukes, Pateria Cox, Crystal Dukes, Samantha Siler, Terra Terrell, and Devon Middleton; and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.
