Obituary

Emerson Wycliff Davis was born in Midway, Florida, on July 12, 1935, as the oldest of seven children to his loving parents, the late Albert Davis, Sr., and Audrey Simpson Davis.

At a young age, Emerson moved to Miami, Florida, and was educated in the Miami-Dade Public School system. He attended Phyllis Wheatley Elementary and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School Class of 1955. He was a faithful member of Gamble Memorial Church of God in Christ until his health declined.

Emerson was employed at Wolfie's and Rascal House on Collins Avenue, known for being the place ... "Where everyone meets to eat." Emerson was such an endeared employee that local patrons and out-of-town guests would often request for Emerson by name.

Emerson was later employed by the International Longshoremen's Association Local #1416 as a Longshoreman for many years until his 2005 retirement. He was a "Boss Man," the Porter Header affectionately known as "Big Em." Emerson was a natural-born leader, leaving a lasting impression on all he came in contact with, especially his I.L.A. gang members. He was highly revered and respected by all who worked with him. He helped many young men gain employment and mentored them in work and life lessons. Even after retirement, Emerson was often sought out for guidance.

Growing up, Emerson was always a loving son, great big brother, and respected friend. He was indeed a man's man. He believed in helping others without expecting anything in return. He was very family-oriented, caring deeply for his wife, children, parents, and siblings. He was a jack of all trades. He enjoyed all sports, especially the Miami Dolphins and the Miami Heat. After his team won, Emerson would call his friends and brag about their defeat. He was sporty, always dawning a hat. His wife made sure he was always well-dressed. Emerson had an elephantine memory, with an impressive ability to remember numbers and details from years past.

Emerson will be missed by many, but we take solace in knowing that he was a true believer in Jesus Christ. On Saturday, July 20, 2024, Emerson transitioned from labor to reward, riding the rainbow from earth to heaven. He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Albert Davis, Jr.

Emerson is survived by his wife, Genease, and five children, Alpha (Deirdra), Wardell, Donease, Ophelia, and his pride and joy, Monica. He also leaves behind four sisters, Alba Berry, Helen (John) Edwards, Juanita (Robert) Reed, Farbia (Peter) Kendrick; a brother, Napoleon (Dorothy) Davis; as well as seven grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
