Obituary
Evelyn Gaskin peacefully passed away surrounded by her family on June 30, 2024. She was born on September 10, 1937, in Lake City, SC, to the late Reuben and Alberta Eaddy Singletary. Evelyn received her early education in Lake City, SC. Under the teachings and leadership of the nuns, she Proudly earned a Certified Nursing Assistant Certificate. She dedicated over 40 years of her life to caring for the sick and vulnerable at Villa Maria Nursing Home. Her compassion and dedication were evident in all she did.
In 1954, Evelyn married the late James Gaskin, and together they raised eight children in Carol City, FL. She also lovingly cared for her sister Margaret and her nephews Larry and John, as well as three grandchildren, Michelle, Twania, and Vonsonita.
Evelyn maintained strong ties to her hometown of Lake City, SC, returning each summer with her husband and children to visit family and build cherished memories with her siblings, nieces, and nephews.
A woman of faith, Evelyn was actively involved in her church throughout her life. She began her journey at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Florida. She later became a dedicated member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church and relocated to Greater Peace Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor John Cherry and remained a loyal member of the church under the leadership of Pastor Sarah Smith. Her service included ushering, fundraising, and providing meals for church events.
Even after retiring from nursing, when she saw her neighbors struggling with ailments, she graciously drove them to church, and doctors’ appointments, brought their garbage cans to the side of the road, was trusted with their keys to let nurses inside their homes and so much more.
After the COVID-19 pandemic, Evelyn’s church transitioned to conducting services over the telephone, ceasing indoor gatherings. Despite this change, Evelyn remained steadfastly loyal to her church, participating in Bible studies and church services through phone calls. Occasionally, she visited New Corinth Missionary Baptist Church, where she expressed admiration for the late Pastor Moses Paschal Sr. and Pastor Moses Paschal Jr.’s sermons.
Known for her strength and outspoken nature, Evelyn was a pillar of support for her family and extended community. She offered guidance and encouragement to her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, always ready with a comforting meal or a listening ear. Her home was a gathering place for celebrations and family gatherings.
In her spare time, Evelyn enjoyed relaxing on her front porch, working in her yard, completing crossword puzzles, and engaging in conversation and laughter with loved ones.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband James Gaskin, daughter Diane Gaskin, parents Reuben and Alberta Singletary, sisters Francis Kilby and Helen Singletary, brother Johnny Singletary, great-grandson Marlon Miller, and Shuneequa Jones, a loving and caring person whom she considered her daughter-in-law.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and memories cherished by her children: Doretha, Elaine, Virginia, Peggy (Roosevelt), James Jr., Edward (Shar), Terry (Yanesssa), Larry (Darlene), and John (Latoya); grandchildren: Michelle, Twania (Cordelle Sr.), Vonsonita, Angelia, Shantel (Stephen), Ashley, Rozetta, Terry Jr., Terence, Anissa, Roosevelt Jr., Rodrick, Darius, Ryan, Tedrick, Evan, and Donah. Great-grandchildren: Marcedez, Dinari, Cordelle Jr., Isaiah, Dillion, Ashton, Prayona, Christopher Jr., Darius Jr., Brenton, Qui’Laya, Stephen Jr., Sarai, Tru, Camren, and Savanah; One great-great-grandchild, J’Mya; Siblings: Margaret, Barbara, Joe, and Willie (Margaret); along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
As it is written in Matthew 11:28 to “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” On June 30, 2024, Evelyn answered the call of her Heavenly Father, finding peace after a life well-lived in service to others. Her legacy of kindness and generosity will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
