Obituary

Flora Mae Emery, born on February 20, 1951, in Chiefland, Florida, was the cherished firstborn daughter of Joy and Janie McCoy. She spent her early childhood in Chiefland before moving to Miami, Florida, where she would make her permanent home. Flora was a devoted mother to her three sons, Melvin, Tony, and John.

From a young age, Flora discovered her passion for singing, performing in the church choir under the watchful eye of her beloved grandmother, Emma Gibbs. Her musical journey continued into the late 1970s when she became the lead singer of a band that graced the stage of the well-known Top Draw Bar and Lounge on Miami Beach. Aside from her musical talents, Flora was an accomplished cook at the Key Biscayne Restaurant.

A woman of deep faith, Flora was a dedicated member of AM Cohen Temple in Overtown, Florida, under the guidance of the late Bishop Cohen. She was a prominent voice in the church choir, lifting spirits with her soulful singing. On February 20, 2013, she married her loving husband, King Emery, at AM Cohen Temple, where she also generously gave her time to feed the homeless every Saturday.

Flora’s love and kindness radiated throughout her life, touching many hearts over her 73 years. In her final days, she was blessed with the presence of her sons, breathing her last breaths as each arrived by her side—a poignant farewell that exemplified her profound love for her family.

Flora leaves behind: her husband, King Emery; sons, Melvin Brown, Tony Brown (Yvette Brown), and John Griffin; grandchildren, Akeem Brown, Melvin Junior, Sahira Brown, Shinelle Posey, Tekora Brown, Kimbrick Moore, and Tyson Herice; as well as numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a wide circle of friends.
