Obituary
Garfield “Gary” Hermus Augustus St. Auburn Pollard was born in Kingstown, St. Vincent, and the Grendadines on October 8, 1951, to the late Gladstone Pollard and Luna Dopwell Sardine. He was raised by his grandmother. He migrated to New York in the 1960s and joined the Army in the 1970s. He finally settled in Miami, Florida, in 1981 and eventually became a loyal fan of the Miami Heat.
Gary worked in the automotive field in several different capacities, finally retiring as a car salesman in 2013. Gary had a love for cars, basketball, and music. One of his most prized possessions was his 1972 Buick Skylark. He was an avid supporter of the Arthritis Foundation and showed his support by participating in walks and promoting a healthy lifestyle. He created a mantra dedicated to his battle with Arthritis. “GU LU SUN GU,” which means Get Up, Look Up, Show Up, and Never Give Up. He was most passionate about spending time with his kids, grandkids, great-grandchild, and he was passionate about his daily five-mile walks in the park at 6:00 AM.
Gary was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia in 2020. Despite his diagnosis, he continued his fighting spirit by participating in weekly physical therapy. On Wednesday, May 10, 2023, God decided he should no longer hurt no more and called him home to rest in heaven. Gary was preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Ruth Pollard.
He is survived by his loving wife, Joan Francis; siblings, Lauren Reynolds, Colin Sardine, Brian Sardine, Ian Sardine, Mark Sardine, Alicia Sardine, Rosalyn Sardine, and Jackie Hughes; seven children, Leslie Pollard, Jillian Wilson (Christopher Wilson), Garfield “Gary” Pollard, Jr. (Adele Pollard), Shauna Pollard, Jonelle Pollard, Gerrard Pollard, Jamia Pollard; bonus daughter, Cherie Williams; grandchildren, Javase Pollard, Ackquille Pollard, Zalonie Pollard, Zhadé Pollard, Christopher Wilson, Jr., Zhane Pollard, Zaliah Pollard, Jazara Wilson, Zhurie Pollard, and Taija Greene; and great-grandchild, Jayceon Pollard.
Gary deeply loved his family including all of his extended family, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. He was one of a kind and will be truly missed.
