Obituary
Geraleen Peek Evans was born on June 15, 1943, to the late Dennis J. Peek and Ernestine Crawford Peek in Miami, Florida. She was married to the late Jimmy Lee Evans, Jr.
Geraleen was a retired registered nurse. She graduated from Miami-Dade Community College where she obtained her Associate of Science degree. She attended Lindsay Hopkins Technical School, where she passed the state board to become a licensed practical nurse. She was also a graduate of Miami Northwestern Senior High School, class of 1961.
Geraleen worked for 38 years at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Her specialties were hemophilia, neurosurgery, and orthopedics. Her achievements included Associate Head Nurse then onto Head Nurse. She was president of NWOA, Miami-Dade Chapter, and Southern Regional Director. She organized the first Youth Achievers Group to feed the homeless. She had over 30 years of achievement with TLOD, and she was the former president.
Geraleen was president and life member of NCNW, she was a member of the NAACP with 21 years of service, was a former President of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, and was a member of St. Mark’s Missionary Baptist Church since 1961 where she served on the Board of Trustees.
Geraleen was also active in the following: TOP Ladies of Distinction, Inc. (Miami Chapter), National Council of Negro Women, Inc. (Metropolitan Dade Section), Nu Chapter of the Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc., since 1999, and the National Women of Achievement, Inc. (Miami-Dade Chapter).
She leaves to mourn: her sister, Shirley Peek; brother, Howard Peek; cousin, Carolyn Jerry-Nelson; bonus children, Lawrence Evans, Lashawn Evans, and Tangela Evans; care provider and nephew, Tremain James; loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, who affectionately called her “Auntie Geraleen;” and a host of other sorrowing relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Dennis J. Peek; mother, Ernestine Crawford Peek; aunt, Bessie Jerry; uncle, Edward Crawford, Jr.; brothers, Dennis Jr. Alfred and Charles; sisters, Ernestine Peek Kelly, Katholeen Peek James, and Rosemary Peek; nephew, Howard Peek, Jr., and Dwaih Edward Kelly; and bonus son, Jimmy Evans III.
