Obituary
“Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.” John 14:1-4
A Time to Be Born
Gerome “George” Atkins was born on February 13, 1945, in Dutch Bend, Alabama, to Atmark and Ella Mae Atkins. He was the fifth child of twelve children born to this union.
A Time to Learn
Gerome received his formal education in Alabama, graduating from Lowndes County High School. Following high school, Gerome relocated to Pahokee, Florida and then to Miami, Florida. At an early age Gerome accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior and served for many years in the men’s choir at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.
A Time to Build
On Monday, March 21, 2023, Gerome Atkins accepted God’s call to replace his earthly tabernacle for one of immortality. He was preceded in death by his parents, Atmark and Ella Mae Atkins; brothers, Atmark Atkins, Jr., Lewis Atkins, and Willie F. Atkins; and sister, Catherine Atkins.
He leaves behind to cherish his memories: his six children, Lativa (Markel) Evans, Carla Atkins, Sonya Atkins, Gerome Fletcher, Matthew Sims, and Michael (Felicia) Akins; seven siblings, Pearlie M. Zigler, Percy (Clara) Atkins, Ola Mae Atkins, Margaret E. Rogers, Pastor Robert E. (Jacqueline) Atkins, Deacon Johnny (May) Atkins, and Ethel P. Atkins; ten grandchildren, Saaya Evans, Sedaya Evans, Messiah Evans, Tavares Clark, Kenya James, Dexter James, Michael Akins, Jr., Malik Akins, Maleahya Akins, and Makayla Akins; special long-time friend, Lashonda Trumpler; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
