Obituary
On Saturday evening, October 11, 2025, an angel softly and tenderly removed from our midst a loving husband and father, a caring brother and uncle, and a dedicated friend and veteran.
Henderson Nelson was born February 8, 1937, to the late Orlando Nelson and Rachel McQueen-Nelson in Douglas, Georgia. He was the eldest of two sons, of which his brother, Joe Steve Nelson, preceded in death.
Henderson was devoted to his country, and in 1954, entered the U.S. military, where he served three years in the army and was honorably discharged in 1962. On March 29, 1958, he married Willie Jean Wilson, and the two relocated to Miami, Florida. Out of that loving union, his only daughter, Rachel Victoria Nelson, was born, his pride and joy. Henderson named his daughter, Rachel, after his beloved mother. He and Willie Jean remained married until her death in 2014.
Education was important to Henderson. Desiring to go beyond his ninth grade education, he attended and graduated at North Miami High Adult Education Center, 1974. He also took courses at Miami-Dade (Community) College. Outside of the classroom, Henderson enjoyed reading, fishing, and hunting.
Career-wise, Henderson was a manager at Tire King (now permanently closed), a carrier for The Miami Herald, and a bus driver for Dade county public schools. With gladness, he transported students for 30 years until his retirement in 2020.
In the house of the Lord, he, along with his wife, was a founding member of Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church, under the late Reverend Pastor James Nelson (unrelated). In the church’s infancy, Henderson was made chairman and secretary in charge of its’ building fund. He was also a member of the church’s trustee board for many years until his health began to decline. He served up to the time of the current Reverend Pastor Van Gaskins.
Henderson leaves to cherish his memory his one and only daughter, Rachel Victoria Nelson; goddaughter, Aavris Lloyd; and a host of extended family, friends, and coworkers.
