Obituary

Ira Lewis Harris started his journey of life, on Friday, October 3, 1952, in Perrine, Florida. He was the first of fourteen children born to his mother, the late Overseer Alice Vernechia Thompson-Harris, and the sixth of twenty children to his father, the late Elder Ira Lewis Harris.

Affectionately known by his siblings and friends as Pop Pop and Uncle Lewis, Ira wanted to ensure that he made his mark on this earth, and wanted to afford himself and children’s opportunities he didn’t have. He was educated in Miami-Dade County Public Schools, at Miami Springs Senior High, and later matriculated to Barry University College of Business Education. He enlisted in military service, serving as a Paratrooper in the Air Force, fighting for a country that still questioned his rights for equality.

After serving in the Air Force, life for Ira wasn’t easy, growing up as a black man, during a time where equality was based on the shade of your skin. He knew that every legacy has its struggles, and every truth has its hardships; Ira strived to do what he believed was right, to give his family a chance at life. Ira found his journey easier to travel with his longtime companion of forty-seven years and wife of twenty-six years, Veronia Morgan. Ira shared his love with humanity and fathered thirty-three children.

On Friday, June 2, 2023, Ira Was released from the challenges and trials of life, into eternity, to join his awaiting sons, Remy and Dwaune, daughters Carol Ann and Chekevia, parents, Ira Lewis Harris and Alice Vernechia Thompson-Harris, and his siblings, Carol Ann, John Anthony, Alicia Jeane, Harvey David, and Mary Delores, who have all gone on before him.

He leaves his memory and life in the hands of his children that remain: Chris (Keisha), Ezekial, Felecio, Debra, Cynthia, Trey, Leronia, Torin, Brandon; thirty-five grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren; nine siblings, Daisy Newsome of Arkansas, Orzona Days, Andrew Harris, Hannah Harris-Francois, Raymond Harris of North Carolina, Eric (Bridgette) Harris, Sr., Queen Ester, Jeremiah Harris of Georgia and Linzy Harris and a host of surviving nephews, nieces, aunts, cousins, and other close friends and relatives.
