Obituary

Janie Mae Varner (maiden name, Jackson) was the second oldest child and only daughter of Martha Thompson Brown and Vance Jackson, Sr., born on September 28, 1939, in
Quitman, GA. She has two brothers, Richard Jackson (eldest) and her baby brother, Vance Jackson, Jr. (a.k.a. Jackie, who preceded her in death in 1999.) In 1952, she gained a second loving father in Edward (Eddie) B. Brown.

In 1957, Janie completed her secondary education at Miami Northwestern High School. She went on to receive her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education at
Bethune-Cookman University on May 27, 1963, and later earned her Master’s in Education. While attending college, during her summer breaks she worked as what were called “Candy Stripers” at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Her caring demeanor and dedication to taking care of the patients were noticed by the Charge Nurse and Janie was offered a full scholarship to nursing school; however, she turned it down to continue on her path to become an educator. She always loved children and that’s where her heart truly belonged; her many nieces and nephews will attest to the fact that she made us feel so loved and special as if we were her own children.

Shortly after graduating college, Janie initially began her 30-year long career with Miami-Dade County as a teacher with the Head Start Educational Center. She once said that she was often mistaken for being a student herself because she was small in stature and always looked far younger than her actual age! Like most teachers, Janie often used her earnings to purchase not only school supplies, but also toiletries, clothing, etc., for various children in need. Eventually, she transitioned over to the county’s Community Action Agency (CAA) where she retired as a Special Project Administrator, responsible for overseeing their Head Start programs as well as other community-based projects and services. She also was a member of the Delta Sigma Theta organization where she also participated in several of their community events. During her 30-year tenure with Miami-Dade County, not only was she recognized with numerous accolades for her dedication to serving others, but she was also much loved by her students and co-workers alike. In 2003, she decided to retire to care for her aging parents.

Janie was also an active member within the church. She was awarded a Certificate of Ordination as an Elder on April 20, 2008, by Fountain of Life International, Inc. She was a strong believer and will be remembered as someone who encouraged so many in their faith walk. Until the very end of days, she continued to rely on and exercise the level of her commitment and belief in Jesus Christ as her Savior. Just days before her passing on April 3, 2023, after years of various health issues, Janie continued to say that she was trusting in the Lord no matter what her circumstances indicated.

Within Proverbs 31 (NIV) a virtuous woman is described throughout this passage as someone who, “opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy. She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom and faithful instruction is on her tongue.” Even her name, Janie, means a gift from God; Jehovah has been gracious and has shown favor. Janie as well has symbolized the qualities of eternal hope, loyalty, faith, and a wise leader. Anyone who knew our Janie knows that she definitely exhibited all these qualities towards her entire family and friends. Our family will forever miss our much beloved second matriarch of our Jackson family.

Janie leaves a beautiful family to mourn her passing until we see her again: her brother, Richard; son, Edward (Darrell); three grandsons, two great-grands, and several nieces and nephews, Delores (Dee Dee), Sythia (Lully), Vance, Toni, Anthony, Tara, and Maurice; and a host of great and greatgreat-nieces and nephews, cousins, goddaughters and
godsons, and numerous friends too many to mention here.

Special acknowledgements to the following individuals who were always so loving and supportive to Janie over the many years: Carolyn Anderson, Johnnie Mae Thomas, Clewis Wright, Virginia Jackson, Marie Jean Simon, and Maikel and Javier Valdes.
