Obituary
Well, if you’re reading this...it was my turn to kick the bucket. Don’t be sad for too long, because I am finally free and in my Father’s house where there is no pain and no suffering.
I was born Joey Thomas Brooks on August 11, 1955, in Miami, Florida, baby of the bunch, born to the late Deacon Leroy and Mamie Lee Whitfield-Brooks.
I attended Liberty City Elementary, Dorsey Jr. High School, and graduated from the Great Miami Northwestern Senior High School, Class of 1974. I received a scholarship for basketball from Tuskegee University in Alabama, and after college I entered into the United States military in 1977 in the U.S. Army Infantry Engineer Corp. sector as a engineer building bridges, roads, etc. I would go on to serve many years, and received an honorable discharge in 1977 . I then began my career at Miami-Dade Transit as a technician doing various tasks such as Specialty Welding and Paint and Body Repairs. After my retirement I had my own plumbing business, a trade I learned from my father, called 2nd Generation Plumbing in his honor.
I enjoyed serving as a mentor and coach to many children. I was known as “Coach Brooks.” I would volunteer at Miami Northwestern Senior High School as a football team (BULL4Life) and I would teach some of them plumbing and welding throughout the year.
I am survived by my loving and committed wife, Delores Blackman-Brooks; and four children: Tonya Brooks, Joey Brooks, Jr., Tarsha Brooks, and Ariel “Tootie” Brooks; Jacorey Brooks, Josiah Brooks, Abbey Blevins, Amber Blevins, Joshua Brooks, Jayceon Brooks, Jhade Brooks; and great-granddaughter Hope Little.
I was preceded in death by my sister, Pauline Whitfield and brother, Walter Brooks. I am survived by sisters Sarah Brooks, Dorothy Benzalih, Rosa Brooks-Tolliver; and brother, Leroy Brooks, Jr.; one aunt, Ollie Mae Whitfield. I also leave behind a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.
