Obituary

On December 7, 1958, God presented Ruby and the late Johnnie Lee McKenzie with a bundle of joy, and they named her Diane McKenzie. Diane received her education from within the Dade County public school system. She was a graduate of Miami Central High School, Class of 1975. Diane was determined to complete her education. In 2019, she graduated from Miami Dade Community College with a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice.

On July 10, 1975, Diane and Ronald Henderson gave birth to a baby girl and named the bundle of joy, Lakiesha. Several years later, Diane became the mother to a bouncing boy named Ronnie.

In 1978, Diane enlisted in the Unites States Army, and in 1980, she received an honorary discharge.

Diane was employed with the State of Florida Department of Corrections for 42 years. Her professional tenure with the Florida Department of Corrections began in 1980 at Graceville Correctional Facility. During her career, Diane spent over 12 years as a Training Advisor for the Department of Corrections at Miami Dade Community College in the Criminal Justice Sector. As a Training Instructor, she held many different certifications and was always willing to accept and excel at any task placed upon her. Diane was fortunate to bless many Correctional Institutions with her charisma, knowledge, and professionalism. From Beckham Hall, Everglades, South Florida Reception Center, and ending her journey at Hollywood Work Release Center.

Diane was known as a stern but gentle Lieutenant to whomever she would encounter. Diane would report to work vigorously every day, until her health began to decline. She was set to retire on November 3, 2023.

On October 25, 2023, at 8:12 a.m., this loving daughter, mother, sister, grandmother, coworker, and friend to many was called home. Surrounded by those who loved her, Diane was preceded in death by her loving brothers, Robert and Johnnie Lee Jr. McKenzie.

Her wonderful memories and legacy will live on through her mother, Ruby; daughter, Lakiesha Henderson; son, Ronnie Holmes; grandchildren, Marquise Mattison and D’Ziyir Holmes; sisters, Bobbie and Linda McKenzie; nieces, Yolanda Braddy, Tyneka Clarke, Angela, and Monica McKenzie, Tameka Coverton-Brumwell, and Vironsay Mckenzie-Walker; nephews, Kalwane McKenzie and Vincent Clarke; and a host of great-nieces/nephews, co-workers, and other extended family.
