Obituary

Juliette Poitier-Higgs was born on April 20, 1950, in Miami, Florida, to Cyril Poitier, Sr., and Albertha Sands Poitier, the eighth child out of ten children.

Juliette was affectionately known as “Julie” or Juliette by family and friends. Julie accepted Catholicism at an early age, and she attended Holy Redeemer Catholic School from kindergarten through eighth grade. Juliette was a faithful member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church where she served in many church roles.

Juliette received her grade and high school education in Miami, Florida. She graduated from Miami Jackson Senior High School. She was a seamstress and in the Top Ladies of Distinction.

After graduating from high school, Julie attended Bethune Cookman University in the field of Education. She was also a member of Sigma Gamma RHO Sorority. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in school administration and supervision. She was employed with the Miami Dade County Public School Board as a teacher. Juliette formed a deep friendship with colleagues and a love and passion with her students.

Juliette married Rodney Higgs and through this union, three children were born: Kira, Keisha, and Rodney Jr. Juliette embrace motherhood with unwavering devotion, creating a home filled with love, warmth, and faith. As her family grew, she fully committed herself to her children with countless sacrifices to mature her growing family. Most importantly, Juliette was rooted in faith, as she used every opportunity to impact the teaching of God’s word. Family gatherings were legendary, filled with laughter, love, and delicious Bahamian meals that she and her mother and sisters prepared. Juliette was the epitome of a devoted sister, mother, and grandmother, never missing a milestone of birthdays, graduation, honor ceremonies, and every special moment in between. Her hugs were warm, and her presence was a source of comfort. Juliette retired after many years with the Miami Dade County School Board.

On February 14, 2025, Juliette was called home to be with her heavenly father. Juliette was preceded in death by her brother, Kermith Poitier; niece, Valencia Poitier; father, Cyril Poitier, Sr.; mother, Albertha Poitier; brothers, Anthony Poitier and Bernard Poitier; and sister, Ethelyn Poitier Hamilton, all of whom she loved and missed dearly.

Juliette leaves to mourn: her husband, Rodney Higgs; children, Kira, Keisha, and Rodney Jr.; grandchildren, Rosalind Poitier Hadley, Doretha Poitier Thomas, Dr. Carolyn Poitier Upson, Cyril Poitier, Jr., and Deborah Poitier; and a host of family and friends who will truly miss her. Until we meet again in our father’s house.
