Obituary
Larry C. Matthews was born in Ozark, Alabama, to Lillia Matthews and the late Al Bert Matthews on May 11, 1949.
As a child, Larry attended D.A. Smith Elementary and High School where he graduated. He then volunteered to serve in the United States Navy. After serving in the military, Larry returned to Alabama and joined the Dothan Police Force.
In 1969, Larry was joined to Miss Leola White in holy matrimony. From this union, they were blessed with Cebran Jamel “C.J.” Matthews and twins, Terron and Toya Matthews. Larry was preceded in death by Terron and C.J.
In 1976, Larry and Leola moved to Miami, Florida, where he joined his brother, Terrell, and cousin, Gene, at Matlyn Ornamental Iron.
After a short stay in Greenville, South Carolina, Larry and his family moved back to Miami, Florida, where he received the “New Birth” from God, under the pastorship of Bishop Ivory T. Covington, Sr., of the Pentecostal Church of the lord Jesus Christ.
Larry’s second marriage to Sister Mittie Washington added a daughter, Shardai Matthews, along with Sister Mittie’s boys, Sean, Cornelius, and Eric, to the family.
The family continued their Christian journey, under the pastorship of Overseer Leonard Brown of Highway Church of the Apostolic Faith. Some years later, Larry and Mittie moved Marianna, Florida, to retire. Mittie became ill and passed on to be with the Lord.
Larry then met and married Katherine Lewis and moved to Augusta, Georgia, where he spent his final days.
On Wednesday, September 20, 2023, Larry suffered a heart attack which ended his days with us. He was also preceded in death by his stepson, Eric Rogers.
Larry leaves to mourn: his mother, Lillia Covington (the late Ivory T. Covington, Sr.); brothers, Ronnie Covington (Shandelle), Ivory Covington (Brenda), and Terrell Matthews (Meka); sons, Sean Washington (Pam) and Cornelius Washington (Samantha); daughters, Toya Ricks (Anthony), Shardai Russell (Timothy), and Tamika Walker; daughters-in-law, Philita and Michelle; grands, Terron Matthews, Tanisha Matthews, Cebran Matthews, Jr., Branden Matthews, Clark “A.J.” Ricks, Jr., Alexis Ricks, Timothy Russell, Tyler Russell, Braxton Crews, Tempesst Brown, Rohaven Washington, Aiyanna Washington, Bree Washington, Sean Washington II, Shuntavia Washington, Sania Pena, Latrishae Reed-Washington, and Ariyonna McNeil; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and neighbors.
