Obituary
Leon Howard, Sr., was born in Tifton, Georgia, on June 20, 1952, to Estella and the late Henry Howard. They migrated to Miami, Florida, while Leon was in elementary school. He attended Miami-Dade public schools, graduating from Miami Central Senior High School in 1968. He attended Miami-Dade College studying drafting. He worked for Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department for over thirty years before retiring in 2006.
Leon met Mildred Patterson during the McDuffie Riots and they married on December 16. To their union, three children were born, Staria Howard, Shakria Howard, and Leon Howard, Jr. They were the loves of his life and he dedicated himself to being an example for them. Leon was a soft-spoken man who said what he meant and meant what he said—a man of very few but meaningful words.
He was baptized by Reverend Atchison of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. In 2010, he became a disciple of the New Harvest Church under the leadership of Reverend Gregory D. Thompson, Jr. He was ordained as a deacon in 2016. He faithfully served until his health no longer allowed him too. He pushed through until the end, singing with the male chorus on Mothers’ Day just six days before his passing.
On the morning of Saturday, May 20, 2023, God looked down on Leon and stated, “Well done, My good and faithful servant. Enter into your rest.” His humble servant obliged, and Leon took his rest. He is now with the Lord and those he loved who preceded him in death, his father, Henry Howard, and siblings, Elaine Howard, and Carey Howard.
Left behind to cherish and celebrate his life are: his mother,Estella Howard; devoted wife, Mildred Howard; children, Staria Howard, Shakria Howard, and Leon Howard, Jr.; grandchildren, Hezekiah Cox, Shamiah Williams, Keimora Cox, Joshua Howard, and Zachary Jones; brothers, Lawrence Howard, Clarence Howard, and Anthony Howard; sisters, Pamela Howard Fudge Martin, Kimberly Hugley (Kelvin “Pete”), and Sherri Gayle (Devon); and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
