Obituary

Livingstone Sweeting was born March 12, 1943, in the town of Port Howe, Cat Island, Bahamas, to Emily Ferguson and Orandel “Papa Jelly” Sweeting. A sickness as a child found the young Sweeting on his death bed, funeral clothes laid out, and mother Emily and family praying for a miracle. On February 1st, God showed up and a miracle was born. Again!
Born the tenth of eleven children, Mr. Sweeting with his brother Nathan would leave Cat Island at the age of 16 after his mother and later grandfather, John Philip Ferguson (a.k.a., Brucey) passed away. In Nassau, Mr. Sweeting attended post-secondary school and attended the W.A.G. Bain Nassau School of Music where he would earn a certificate and eventually go on to teach parttime.
Mr. Sweeting was an early protégé (1965-1969) of Meyer Rassin, (formally the founder of Doctor’s Hospital), sold insurance at Family Guardian, and finally enjoyed a lengthy career managing security at Charlotte House for City Properties for over 40 years. Mr. Sweeting, in his brown uniform, could often be found walking downtown Nassau running errands and carrying out his duties.
While attending St John’s Baptist Church, he met and married Jane Davis from Abaco, Bahamas. Their union would end in divorce but would produce four (loves of his life) children of whom he was very proud. His subsequent marriage to Sheila Sweeting from Cat Island would produce his fifth love of his life, Kristian (Cookie) Sweeting. Cookie, a school teacher (now deceased) was a most beautiful soul.
Deacon Sweeting was a man with a big heart who everyone could always be counted on. He was a stalwart servant of God. He was a servant in his home church, St. John’s Native Baptist Cathedral, where he served as a Sunday School Teacher, Superintendent, Videographer, Senior Choir Director, and later Deacon. He was a loving father to his children, always present and always loving. Deacon Sweeting spent the last eight years of his life closer to his children and grandchildren in Florida. He died on April 9, 2024, at Jackson Memorial North.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kristian Sweeting; and siblings, Virginia Taylor, Maudlin Carey, Reverend Luanna Rolle, Reverend Nathan Sweeting, Danford Sweeting, Copeland Sweeting of Hialeah, FL, Brezetta Moxey, Pastor Milton Sweeting, Ashley Sweeting, Harold Sweeting, and Johnathan Taylor.
Mr. Sweeting leaves behind to mourn and cherish his memories: his children, Alvin Sweeting and wife Marcuita of Maryland, Livingston Sweeting of Georgia, Lisa Sweeting of Florida, Porsha Sweeting of Florida, and his wife, Shelia Sweeting, (Kennedy Subdivision Nassau); he leaves twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; he also leaves behind nieces and nephews, Emanuel Rolle, Bloneva Bowe, Carmita Rolle, Patricia Armbrister, Eunice Rolle, Anthony Rolle, Rolle, Leanna Smith, Helen Morrison, Barbra Smith, Alice Rahming, Elizabeth Rolle, Lionel Carey, Roscoe Carey, Mark Carey, Reeba Carey, Kirkwood Andrews, Captain Author Moxey, the late Ruel Moxey, Janet Bullard, Reverend Greyland Moxey, the late Dianna Moxey, Daniel Moxey of New York, Copeland Moxey, Jerry Moxey, Elisabeth Moxey, James Moxey, Rosemary Moxey of Florida, David Moxey and Lincoln Moxey of Alabama; and Deacon Sweeting also had a countless number of cousins, nieces, and nephews throughout the islands of the Bahamas and the United States.
