Obituary

Sister Mae Helen Watkins was born in Danville, Georgia to the late George “Buddy” Lewis Watkins, Jr. and Alberta “Tang” Watkins. She is the third of four children born to this union. Sister Watkins received her education in the Georgia school system, graduating from Wilkerson County High School.

At an early age, Mae accepted the Lord into her life. She attended the “Big Meeting” church services in Georgia and was baptized with the Mount Tilla Missionary Baptist Church in Irwinton, Georgia

In 1966, Mae decided to join her sister, Bernice, and brother, Samuel, by moving to Miami, FL. That same year, she began her employment at Malone & Hyde where she worked for more than 18 years until the company was sold and moved out of South Florida. However, Mae continued working in the retail and alteration industry. She even started her own small seamstress business until her retirement due to health issues.

In 1972, Mae was blessed with a daughter, Zelda, upon whom she focused all her energy and love.

In the late 80’s, Mae joined her sister, Bernice, as a member of Mount Olive Primitive Baptist Church under the Leadership of the Late Elder Frazier Arnold, Jr. This inspired her mother, Alberta to move her membership to Mt. Olive as well. She remained a devoted servant of the Lord and church member until her health began to fail serving on the Sisterhood Committee and assisting with the custodial ministry.

On Sunday morning, November 16, the Lord said, “suffer no more my child”, and he called Mae home to glory.

She leaves to cherish her blessed memory one daughter, Zelda Calvert (Late Ryan Calvert); two grandsons, Darius (Kinshasa) Calvert and Devin Calvert; two sisters, Bernice Jones (Late Charles Jones) and Connie Ellington (David Ellington, Sr.) along with a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and wonderful neighbors. Her brother, Samuel Watkins preceded her in death.
