Obituary
Malvina “Sang” Hammett, a beloved wife, sister-in-law, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, woman of God, and servant of God to her family and community, made her final transition on August 25, 2026, in Miami, Florida.
Malvina was born on January 19, 1933, in Alcolu, South Carolina, to Isabella Abraham (deceased) and Walter Preston (deceased). She attended Cypress Fork Elementary School and Cypress Fork High School. At the tender age of 12, Malvina accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and joined Cypress Fork A.M.E. Church. Her relationship with God would become the foundation of her life. Her faith was not simply something she practiced—it was something she lived.
At the age of 19, in December 1952, Malvina married William E. Hammett, Sr. Together, they built a family and raised six children. On April 1, 1960, the family relocated to Miami, Florida, beginning a new chapter of their life. Shortly thereafter, Malvina attended and joined St. Paul A.M.E. Church and later joined Greater Israel Bethel Primitive Baptist Church on April 7, 1974, under the leadership of Reverend P. D. Brantley. No matter how demanding life became, Malvina and William made certain that their children were in church on Sundays, even when they had to work. Malvina’s commitment to raising their children in faith was steadfast. She was a devoted member of Greater Israel Bethel Primitive Baptist Church for 52 years where she served faithfully in several capacities. During her most vibrant years and well into her seasoned years, she served as an assistant Sunday School teacher, member of the Mother’s Board, and president of the Sisterhood.
Family was always first to Malvina. She was a woman who loved deeply and took great pride in caring for those around her. She was also gifted with her hands and possessed an extraordinary creativity. She was a talented beautician, seamstress, cook, baker, and upholsterer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William E. Hammett, Sr.; brothers, Clarence Preston, James Preston, and Cleo Preston; sister, Ethel Burgess; daughters, Isabella Yvonne Hammett, Cynthia Hammett, and Melvina E. Hammett; granddaughter, Latoya Kinchen; great-granddaughter, Jhanae Ingraham; and great-grandson, Mikiel Burrows.
Remaining to carry out her legacy are her brothers, Walter, and Leroy (Annie Lee); sister, Loubertha; daughters, Annie Ingraham (Chris, deceased), Doris Billingslea (Bruce, deceased), and Louvenia Lee; son, William Hammett (Jennifer); sister-in-law, Alva (Babe); brother-in-law, Alphonso; grandsons, Franklin (Brenitta), Tavares, Rene, Philip, Quentin, and Stehson; granddaughters, Shawnee, Che’nara, Rodnee, and Christa; great-grandaughters, Janel, Tiana, Faith, Shaniece, Brianna, and Jalissa; great-grandsons, Stephen, Nathan, Micah, Tremayne, Derek, and Messiah; great-great-grandsons, Jhalen, Sya, and Dontray; great-great-granddaughter, Kelsey; great-nieces and great-nephews; and a host of relatives, including Marcus Sparks (Rita) and Kevan Sparks, and friends.
