Obituary
Marie Peterman Hicks, lovingly known as Babbie to her family, was born on April 25, 1949, in Fort Gaines, Georgia, to Maybelle and Cliff Peterman. Marie’s life was a beautiful reflection of the values she held dear: family, faith, kindness, and connection. She graduated from Speight High School in 1967 and later met the late Eddie George Hicks, in their hometown. In 1969, the couple relocated to Miami, Florida, where they built a home filled with love, raising their three beloved daughters, Calandra Hicks, Clarissa Cooper (Eddie), and Kamie Hicks (Phonteen).
Marie devoted more than thirty years of her career to serving others as a dietary technician at Parkway Regional Hospital and the Miami Jewish Home, a role she deeply enjoyed until her retirement in 2014. In 1980, she furthered her education by completing business coursework at Lindsey Hopkins Technical College—a testament to her determination and life-long commitment to growth.
Marie was known for her elegance, gentle spirit, and the genuine warmth she brought to every room. Her faith in God was unshakable, and she was a quiet prayer warrior who lifted up everyone she encountered. Her greatest joy was being surrounded by family, especially during the holidays. Marie’s legendary holiday meals—featuring her famous sweet potato pies and potato salad—were more than just delicious food; they were moments of joy, laughter, and lasting memories.
Outside of the kitchen, Marie loved life’s little pleasures: a fun trip to the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, a scenic road trip, or cheering on her favorite basketball team, the Miami Heat. She lived with joy and taught those around her to embrace the good in every situation.
Marie departed this life on September 8, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of grace, faith, and unwavering love. A true woman of deep spiritual strength, Marie was a cornerstone in the lives of all who knew her.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Maybelle and Cliff Peterman; brother, Johnny C. Peterman (Pan); sisters, Georgia Mae Hinton, Ruthie Bell Griggs, and Marjorie Ann Peterman; and brother, James Peterman.
She leaves behind: her three daughters, Calandra, Clarissa, and Kamie; her four grandchildren, Kenneth, Rondale, Phonteen Jr., and her only beautiful granddaughter, Phoenix; her three great-grandchildren, Elijah, Jakari, and Jayce; and her two loving sisters, Gladys Moorer of Miami, FL, and Rosie L. Peterman of St. Petersburg, FL; along with a host of devoted relatives, friends, and all those blessed to have known her.
Marie Peterman Hicks lived a life full of love, faith, and quiet strength. Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in knowing that she is now at peace, reunited with her loved ones, and embraced in the arms of angels. She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered.
