Obituary
Marvin and Barry met in 1983, but rekindled their friendship, which developed into a relationship in 2007. They were married in October 2020 after both surviving COVID-19.
Mop’s well known signature was her passion for fashion, especially her hats and shoes. She had a smile that lit up a room.
Marvin answered God’s call on Friday, April 21, 2023, in Douglas, Georgia.
She was preceded in death by: her father, Marvin Welch; brothers, Dwight Joyce, Clarence Joyce, and Ronald Wright; and sister, Barbara Jean Lovett. She leaves to mourn her memory: husband, Barry Smith; mother, Fronita Wright; sisters, Eartha Webster, Florence Perrymond, and Regina Joyce; brothers, Isreal Joyce (Veronica), James Joyce (Gerona), Windora Joyce (Thomasedda), and Theoplous Wright; children, Anthony Lewis Burney II, Taurean Burney, Cordell Smith, Brianna Smith-Robertson, Barry Smith II, and Rick Wright; special relatives, Charles, Joseph, and Tanya Moore, and Robert and Johnny Womble; special friends, Mae Jackson, Janice Thomas, Alstene McKinney, and Donna Hawthorn; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving relatives, and friends.
Marvin Delores Webster Smith, affectionately known to everyone as “MOP,” was born in Claxton, Georgia, on December 4, 1955, to Fronita Webster and Marvin Welch. Marvin was the fifth of ten children.
MOP gave her life to Christ at an early age. She attended Greater Love MB Church and Jesus Peoples Ministries on a regular basis. MOP was educated within the Miami Dad County public school system, attending Miami Edison Sr. High School, but graduating from Miami Carol City Sr. High School. She continued her education by attending Miami Dade Community College, where she received her AA Degree.
MOP retired from Miami-Dade County public schools as an executive secretary in the Federal Grants Administration Department, during which time she received numerous awards for dedicated service. MOP was a loving, devoted, and dedicated mother to many, especially Tamara Joyce and her sons, Anthony Lewis Burney II, affectionately known to her as “Rabbit,” Taurean Burney, affectionately known as “Tory,” Jackie Beckford and goddaughter, Ashley Thomas.
