Obituary

Melvin E. Swain, Sr., was born on December 19, 1959, in Miami, Florida to his loving parents, Joe and Mattie Swain, who preceded him in death.

Melvin, along with his brothers and father, played in the band, and Melvin was an amazing bass player.

During his high school years at South Ridge Senior High School, he excelled in football and wrestling. He graduated from Miami North Western High School in 1978.

He served in the United States Army from 1984 to 1988. There, he was a part of the 82nd Airborne Division, which was the U.S. Army’s most strategically mobile division. There, he specialized in “responding to crisis contingencies anywhere in the world within 18 hours”. He was based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and ranked E5 Sergeant.

He gave his life to the Lord many years ago at St. John’s Holiness Church in Coconut Grove and later began to worship at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Miami Gardens, Florida, under the leadership of Arthur Jackson III and First Lady Kimberly Rushin Jackson. Melvin loved God and sought to serve Him with his whole heart. Melvin was a man that was full of laughter and joy. He took pride in fellowshiping with family and friends near and far. He was a motivator and encourager; he wanted to see everyone win. Melvin met and married June Morton; this union bore two children. He loved his family dearly. He was a protector by nature
and wouldn’t allow anyone to cause harm to them. To know him was to love him. He will forever be in our hearts.

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, and I have kept the faith”.
II Timothy 4:7

On Saturday, March 11, 2023, Melvin crossed the finish line. He leaves to cherish his loving memories: wife, June Morton-Swain; daughter, Vanessa Swain (Joe); son, Melvin E. Swain, Jr.; siblings, Willie Lewis (Shelia), Bobby Swain (Delores), Tina Wiggins (Zach), William Swain, and Eddie Glover (Tameka); great-uncle, Arthur Bernard Swain (Essie); eight nieces and seven nephews; and honorary brothers, Billy Dowling, Marvin Johnson, and Milton Oaks.

In addition to his parents, Joe and Mattie Swain, Melvin was preceded in death by siblings, Gladys Higgs, Joe Louis Swain, Jr., Joseph Lee Swain, Gregory Swain, Eugene Swain; along with eleven nieces and twelve nephews.
