Obituary
Rodney Tyrone Thomas, Sr., was born on September 12, 1965, in Miami, Florida to James Warthen and Laverne Warthen. He attended Miami Dade County public schools, where he graduated from Miami Edison Senior High School in 1984. He was a member of the wrestling team.
He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1985 and completed his basic training in San Diego, California. He served in the United States Navy for 23 years as an MS I and received an honorable discharge. While in the military Rodney served two tours in Iraq and one tour in Afghanistan as a member of the Special Rescue Swim Force. He was a leader and became one of the best chefs.
After Rodney completed his military service, he joined Miami Dade County Corrections Department. His career spanned 18 years until his death on November 8, 2024. He was a Food Service Supervisor II in the Nutrition Division.
Rodney was a lover of sports. He was a dedicated Miami Dolphin and Miami Heat fan. Rodney was an honorable man who loved his wife and children unconditionally without exception. He led by example and was respected by the Naval and Corrections communities.
Rodney was preceded in death by his father, James Warthen, mother, Laverne Warthen, and brother, David Thomas.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife of 37 years, Mildred Thomas; daughters, Shequilia Jenkins and Rodneshia Thomas of Miami, FL; son, Rodney Tyrone Thomas, Jr., of Charlotte, NC; brothers, Kenneth (Tara) Warthen of Miramar, FL, Kenny Warthen of West Palm Beach, FL, Travis Warthen of Miami, FL, and Timothy (Colette) Warthen of West Palm Beach, FL; sisters, Tanya Warthen of West Palm Beach, FL and Jennifer Warthen of Miami, FL; stepbrothers, Clifford Brown and Abdul Brown of Miami, FL; grandchildren, Jeremiah, Ymani, Gavriella, and Malachi; close family members, Ashley, Kwanzay, and Barbaro Jenkins; and a host of other relatives, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
