Obituary

Ulysses Samuel Howard was born on September 16, 1945, to the proud parents, Beatrice Atkinson Howard and Barty Clemon Howard in Waverly, Camden County, Georgia. Ulysses was the third of twelve children, six boys and six girls.

Ulysses was educated in Camden County public schools. He graduated from Ralph Bunche High School in 1962 and later that summer he enlisted in the US Army. While in the army he studied at the University of Michigan. Upon completion of his duty time, he returned to Georgia and enrolled at Savannah State University. However, as fate would have it, he came to Miami for a little R & R in December of 1966 and did not return for enrollment at SSU. However, he completed his education attending Miami Dade College and St. Thomas University.

Ulysses held several jobs before being hired by United Parcel Service (UPS). He was initially hired as a retail delivery person but was soon promoted to a supervisory position, and later advanced to an operations manager role, accumulating over 34 years of service in total.

On April 8, 1967, Ulysses joined hands in holy matrimony with Emilie King, enjoying 57 years, 11 months, and 17 days of marriage. From this union two children were born: Ulysses Jr. and James.

Ulysses accepted Christ early in his life. He was a member of the Mt. Sinai MBC in Waverly, Camden County, Georgia. After moving to Miami, he joined Mt. Sinai MBC in the Buena Vista area of Miami. He later joined First Baptist Church of Bunche Park where he served diligently until his health began to fail. He served as deacon, ground superintendent, kitchen coordinator, transportation, and trustee. Ulysses was a true servant of the Lord. He was sincere in his service, truthful in conversation, sober at all times, and faithful in all things. May his work and witness have been a praise and glory to God.

On March 26, 2025, Ulysses was called to be with the Lord, Jesus Christ. He leaves to cherish precious memories: his devoted and loving wife, Emilie; two sons, Ulysses Jr. (Tracy) and James (Kendra); grandchildren, Jason and Kayla; one daughter-niece, Lathyrell (Alexia); goddaughters, Tearsa Smith-Bonds (Lucious), La’Keitha Carlos (Joseph), and Jessica Grant (Rashaun); grand-goddaughters, Jourdyn and Madissen Derise, and Sage Carlos; nine living siblings, four brothers, James, Richard (Irma), Joe (Betty), and Rodney (Ethel), and five sisters, Marilyn, Carolyn (Lance), Joyce, Vanessa (Earl), and Sheila; as well as a host of other relatives, nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

Special thanks to all of his doctors and nurses for their unwavering love and support of regularly being there, daily, to assist in his care.

I worked with Frater Howard on the Board of Directors for the Zeta ROYAL Community Center. He was a no-nonsense leader who exemplified the ideals of our brother fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma, and exhibited a Christlike demeanor at all times. My condolences to his wife Emilie and the entire family. I know he will be missed, but may you take comfort in knowing that his work is done and he is safely home.
