Obituary

It was a beautiful day on March 31, 1933, when God blessed George and Edith Humes with another handsome son, who they name WELLINGTON JUDSON HUMES.

Wellington was raised in the Liberty City area of Miami with his siblings, Clifton, James, George, Reggie, Leroy, Frank, Venola, Bernice, Edith, and Theresa, who all preceded him in death. Their family bond was filled with plenty of love and devotion. All his mother and father also preceded him in death. Wellington was the last man standing. I can only imagine their reunion celebration upon his arrival.

At an early age, Wellington confessed Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. He met and married a beautiful woman who he loved and adored, Naomi Juanita Balom, and to this union they were blessed with ten children. Unfortunately, God called Naomi home to glory early in life and Wellington took on the full responsibility to raise the children all by himself. Later, after the children were all grown up, he met the joy of his life once again, Ms. Gloria Rivers, and he married her. They lived a happy life until her passing. Many people loved Wellington for his compassion and great charm. He was a joy to be around and loved being around his family.

Wellington received his formal education through the Miami-Dade County Public School System. He attended Miami Dorsey Senior High School in Liberty City. He worked at Orange Blossom for 26 years then worked for the City of West Miami Public Works until his retirement in 2016.

Family gatherings were his favorite thing he loved to do. Every year during his birthday month the children made plans to celebrate him by planning an event for him. After all children and 70 plus grandchildren were not able to fit in his home any longer, we began making plans to have park parties for him. This went on for over 25 years. What joyous time he would have to see all his offspring in one place.

Our daddy was a tall, gentle giant and a man of few words, but his emotions spoke volumes. He often used his expression to let you know he agreed or disagreed with what was going on. Some of his sayings were, “How about that,” “Back at you,” “ditto,” or “Same here,” just to name a few. He loved to laugh with the grand and great-grandchildren mocking what he says.

On April 5, 2023, Wellington received his heavenly wings. We thank God for the ninety years of life he was allowed to see and share with his wonderful family.

Now he leaves to cherish his memories the family he loves so much: his children, sons, Clyde B. Glover, Wellington J. Humes, Jr., and Thomas B. Brantley; daughters, Clarietha Steele (Edward), Brenda N. Conyers (Bishop Sammie), Wilma M. Humes, and Thomasena Danley (Frederick); and a host of many, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews too many to list.

He was preceded in death by: daughters, Marjorie Banks, Shirley D. Jackson, and Synthia V. Humes-King.

We will miss our dad, the patriot of the family, but we remember how he shared himself for us. Prayerfully, we can make him proud as we continue to live and show our love to one another.
