Obituary

la R. Horton was born on May 13, 1960, in Miami, Florida, to the late Willie and Pecola Horton. She was a lifelong resident of Miami, deeply rooted in the community that shaped her and that she, in turn, touched through her creativity, service, and love.

Willa grew up in the historic neighborhood of Coconut Grove, Florida, where her early years were filled with family, imagination, and artistic expression. She attended Coral Gables High School, where her creativity and individuality began to shine. From a young age, Willa had a passion for dancing and drawing—talents that would remain close to her heart throughout her life.

An accomplished artist, Willa took great pride in leaving her mark on the community she loved. One of her most meaningful achievements was contributing a mural to a building in the City of Coconut Grove, a lasting testament to her artistic spirit and her connection to her hometown.

Throughout her life, Willa held various occupations, always approaching her work with dedication and pride. Her final place of employment was with the City of Miami Beach Parking Authority, where she served faithfully and was known for her commitment and quiet strength.

Although Willa did not have children of her own, her heart was abundantly full. She lovingly embraced her nieces and nephews as if they were her own children, offering them unconditional love, guidance, and support. Family meant everything to Willa, and she cherished every moment spent with her loved ones and dear friends.

Willa was a true foodie at heart, finding joy in good meals and shared laughter. She also found peace and fulfillment in her faith, spending time reading her Bible and spiritual books, drawing strength from her relationship with God.

Willa leaves to cherish her memory two devoted sisters, Dorothy J. Livingston and Lyral L. Sands, both of Miami, Florida; three uncles, Dr. Reverend Willie J. Carpenter of Miami, Florida, Arthur Carpenter, and Willie Frank Carpenter, both of Wauchula, Florida; one aunt, Gracie Safford (Alfonzo) of Wauchula, Florida; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, other extended family members, and friends.

Willa’s life was a blessing, her memory a treasure, and her love a legacy that will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
