Obituary

Deacon Charles Houston, the beloved son of Levi Houston and Mary Gallon, was born on June 15, 1951. They instilled in him values of faith and hard work through his upbringing at home in the Georgetown community. He was also blessed to have had extended family members and caring neighbors who were major influences in his life. He was a lifelong resident of Madison, Florida.

The shining example of God’s love and grace was reflected in Deacon Houston’s role as a great husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He loved everyone unconditionally and had his own way of making each person feel special. He was an excellent cook who was rewarded for his efforts when they enjoyed and appreciated what he prepared.

Deacon Houston professed his belief in Jesus Christ at an early age. As he matured in faith, he was also a member committed to be of service to others. He was a dedicated pillar of St. James Missionary Baptist Church and was later chosen to serve on the Deacon Board.

A reflection of God’s love in his life, Deacon Houston was one who never met strangers, for he considered them to be friends he had not yet gotten a chance to know. He was cordial and extremely helpful to anyone in need.

Deacon Houston began his formal education at Madison County Training School and received his diploma from the Adult Vocational Program at North Florida Junior College (currently North Florida State College). Afterwards, he taught masonry classes there. Because of his desire to try something new, he obtained his CDL certification to begin his career in truck driving. Another favorite pastime of his was being a mechanic.

On Thursday, April 24, 2025, the Lord looked upon Deacon Charles Houston with eyes of compassion, for he had fulfilled his purpose on earth. “Then in a twinkling of an eye, Deacon Charles transitioned from earthly labor to receive his heavenly reward.”

Deacon Charles Houston will live on through his legacy of love and goodwill to his family, his community, and to his church.  Those who will miss him until they meet again are his loving wife of nearly 40 years: Mary Williams Houston of Madison, FL; son: Anthony S. (April) Robinson of Madison, FL; daughters: Katrina (Tony) Williams, Kechia Robinson (Travis), Dessenna (Danyell) Davis, Shandra Treadwell, all of Madison, FL, Charslyn (Christopher) Chambers of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and Kenya Houston of Orlando, FL; mother: Mary Gallon Wesley; brothers: Michael Houston, Tim Houston, Douglas (Pornnapa) Wesley of Thailand, Otis (Lenore) Wesley of San Diego, CA, and Michael (Inette) Wesley of Pflugerville, TX; sisters: Moniece Wesley, Elaine (Ashley) Oglesby, Carolyn Cherry, and Susan Turner, all of Madison, FL, Jacqueline DeLeon, Dorothy Houston, and Lavora (Johnnie) McDaniel, all of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Dorothea (Major) Sims and Sharlett Richardson, all of Orlando, FL, Joann Houston of NY, Beverly (Willie) Walton of Atlanta, GA, and Elaine (John) Young of Syracuse, NY; fifteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister-in-love: Lizzie Mae Williams of Orlando, FL; best friends: Peter Jackson and Michael Gibson; godchildren: Candra McQuay, Tokethia Bryant, Adrian Ghent, and Bobby Williams III; together with many other sorrowing relatives,  mournful friends, and the St. James Baptist Church family.

Preceding Deacon Charles Houston in death were his father, Levi Houston; his son, Bernard Sneed; and his daughter, Tamekia Houston.
