Obituary
A Time to Be Born
Mother Thelma Patterson Horne Thomas, affectionately known as “Sis,” “Bird,” and “Pookie,” was born the first of eight children to the late Rev. Howard McAfee Patterson and Mother Rosa Lee Clark on April 14, 1934. Her mother later married David Horne, who reared her as his own.
A Time to Learn
Thelma received her formal education in the Sumter County School District in Americus, Georgia. She later studied and received certifications in Early Childhood Education.
A Time to Love
In 1960, Thelma united in marriage to Louis Thomas, and together they grew and nurtured family of nine children. They remained married for 47 years until his demise in 2007.
A Time to Work
Early in her life, Thelma worked in agriculture and private household services. Later, she transitioned to dietary services and worked as a childcare provider. Most importantly, what she loved the most was being the mother to her nine children and caring for the many children whose lives she touched through her work and community outreach.
A Time to Serve
Thelma accepted Christ at an early age at Welcome Baptist Church in Americus, Georgia. Later, the family moved to Amsterdam, Georgia, where she joined Smith Grove M.B. Church in Attapulgus, Georgia. The family then relocated to Florida, and there she joined New Jerusalem M.B. Church in Havana, Florida under the pastorate of Rev. W.M. Maxwell, where she served for over 50 years in the choir and the Deaconess ministry.
A Time to Enter Eternal Rest
Thelma answered the Master’s call in the early hours of Monday, August 24, 2026.
A Time to Celebrate
Cherishing her memory are eight children: Alvis Horne Sr. (Karen) of Tallahassee, Florida; Prophetess Jacqueline Rosier of Havana, Florida; Antonio Thomas of Columbus, Georgia; Linda Thomas of Overland Park, Kansas; Prophet T. Detavia Thomas (Althea) of Lakeland, Florida; Sharon McGill (Pastor Gerald) of Crawfordville, Florida; Pastor Muriel Pitts (Nolan) of Phenix City, Alabama; and her youngest daughter and long-time caregiver, Andrea McMillan of Havana, Florida.
Also cherishing her memory are five siblings: Jessie Mae Rogers, Louise Lucas, and Dorothy Douglas, all of the Bronx, New York; James Horne, Sr. of Winter Haven, Florida; and Eddie Horne, Sr. (Martha) of Havana, Florida.
Her legacy also lives on through fifteen grandchildren: Venecia Foster (Mickey), Shelethia Johnson (Steve), Mario Andrews, Candice Andrews, Alvis Horne, Jr., Wesley Turner, III (Amanda), Clarence Benton, Jr., Briget’ Harley (Jajuan), Philemon Rosier, Toni Thomas, Tori Thomas, Jordan Horne, Daniel Thomas, Kristin McGill, and Brooklyn Clark; twenty-one great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
She also leaves to cherish her memory a special family friend, Carl McBride, who held a special place in her heart as a son, and Muriel Kweyama, a beloved daughter-in-law whose relationship with her remained close and cherished throughout the years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Wyomia Horne Harris; and siblings: Herman Patterson, Mattie Harrison, Eugene Horne, Jessie Horne, Mary Smith, Bishop Mamie Raji, and Freddie Mae Harrison.
