Obituary
Reverend Tommie Lee Burton brightened the lives of Thomas Burton and Cora Parker Newson on the day of his birth, March 28, 1940. They knew that he was born in the favor of God. Affectionately called Tom, he was a lifelong resident of the Maccleny (Baker County), Florida, community.
Rev. Burton was preceded in death by his parents: Thomas Burton and Cora Parker Newson; and bonus children: Lorraine J. Brown and Michael Jonas.
A man of faith, Tom came boldly to the throne of grace, and accepted Christ as his Redeemer early in life. God groomed and grew him into his divine purpose. He accepted the call into the ministry and dedicated his service, not for the recognition of man but for His glory. The joy of the Lord was his strength as an assistant servant leader of the Mt. Arat Missionary Baptist Church in Macclenny. This joy that he had for serving was not given to him by the world; therefore, the world couldn’t take it away. He attended church until his declining health prevented him from doing so.
Rev. Burton loved his career as a truck driver because he loved to travel. Working in this capacity, he was able to sufficiently provide for his family. This was a responsibility he joyfully accepted in faith.
Spending time with Jesus was a daily routine Rev. Burton looked forward to. In addition to studying His Word, he also enjoyed receiving divine inspiration from listening to Gospel music and the songs of Zion that would “Lead Me to the Rock That’s Higher Than I”.
The Reverend Tommie Lee Burton fulfilled his promise to serve the Lord with gladness. He lived to die only to live again. The Lord chose Friday, November 8, 2023, to bring His faithful servant home. He is now somewhere around the throne of God proclaiming, “If you miss me from praising down there; you can’t find me nowhere. Come on up to bright glory, I’ll be praising up here.”
Celebrating the Reverend Tommie Lee Burton’s life is the truest testimony of his legacy of life, love, and longevity. Loved ones who will cherish his memory are his loving wife of 25 years: Mary Louise Johnson Burton; sons: John L. Allen of Lake City, FL, Edward J. Allen, and Jerome A. Allen, both of Macclenny, FL; brothers: Willie James Burton of Valdosta, GA, Robert (Dottie) Burton of Norfolk, VA, Johnnie Newson of Corpus Cristie, TX, and Richard Burton of Waycross, GA; sisters: Jackie Fisher of Brooklyn, NY and Lottie Bennett of Houston, TX; bonus children: Raymond Jonas, Sr., Tommie (Mildred) Jonas, Marian Denson, Annie Jo Martin, Brenda (Frankie) Johnson, all of Madison, FL, David (Gwen) Jonas of Tampa, FL, Terry Jonas of Newark, NJ, Iris (John) Allison- Hawthorne of Albany, GA, and Angela (Wayne) Messam of Miramar, FL; along with many other sorrowing relatives, compassionate friends, and loving church family.
