Obituary

Brother Tommie Lee Swilley, the son of Isom Swilley and Georgia Shula Swilley, was born on April 2, 1937, in Madison, Florida. He was nurtured by his village of godly supporters who instilled within him and his siblings the need to demonstrate Christian values, to love family unconditionally, and to have a work ethic extraordinaire. He was a lifelong resident of his hometown community.

Brother Tommie loved the Lord and aspired to demonstrate it in the way he presented himself and interacted with others. He had a personal confession of his belief in Jesus Christ as his Savior and was baptized by faith. He dedicated his service to the Lord and in support of the church and its leadership at Mt. Nebo and Mt. Zion – Madison African Methodist Episcopal Churches. He served the Lord with gladness for the rest of his life.

The love Brother Tommie had for his family was unconditional. He offered them wise counsel when asked, supported them in doing what was right, and willingly put their needs ahead of his own. A testament of his undying love for his wife of 65 years was for her to have been the stay-at-home wife for whom he would always provide. He also shared his love and enjoyment for the many generations of his extended family.

Having been taught the importance of a work ethic early in life, Brother Tommie was the good provider he desired to become. He was employed as a concrete finisher at E.M. Watkins Construction Company at the Buckeye Cellulose Corporation of Perry, Florida. This operation was commonly referred to as “The Mill.”

In addition to the strenuous work of his employment, Brother Tommie looked forward to taking advantage of his leisure, for he valued the beauty of life itself. He enjoyed the relaxation of fishing from the banks of his favorite fishing holes and/or casting his rod and reel in his preferred lake or pond. He also loved being the “grill master” for his specialty dishes and maintaining curb appeal for his yard.

Brother Tommie Lee Swilley’s life was that of strength, love, and determination. Because of his steadfast faith, he knew that “when He calls me, I will answer; I’ll be somewhere listening for my name.” Therefore, on Saturday, March 8, 2025, Brother Tommie gave up his fight for life on earth, answered the Master’s call to reunite with his wife and other family members, and to be at eternal rest in the presence of the Lord.

Brother Tommie Lee Swilley’s legacy and fulfillment of life shall continue through his family, friends, and all other lives he impacted in his unique way. Forever cherishing his life are his devoted son: Edwin (Carlene) Swilley of Madison, FL; daughter: Frances Ransom of Madison, FL; grandchildren: Tommy Owens, Tony Owens, Kecia Owens, and Frances Johnson; 12 great-grandchildren; 24 great-great grandchildren; along with countless other loving nieces, nephews, and cousins; sorrowing friends; and consoling neighbors.

Brother Tommie Lee Swilley was the last member of his family to cross over to the Glorious Shore. Like all others before him, he now belongs to the ages. Preceding him in death were his parents: Isom Swilley and Georgia Shula Swilley; loving wife of 65 years: Edith Wells Swilley; daughter: Ethelle Owens; brothers: Isom Swilley, Jr., Lugene Swilley Robert “Doll” Swilley, Ferris Lee Swilley, and Hercules Swilley; sisters: Rosa Lee Swilley, Mary Swilley, and Georgia Mae Swilley; and grandson: William McGhee.
