Obituary
Mother Willie Mae Washington, who arrived on August 25, 1937, in Madison, Florida, was God’s gift to Rev. Willie Randolph Washington and Mother Rosa Mae Mathis Washington. However, as was the tradition at that time, Willie Mae did not live with her parents, but was allowed to live in the Georgetown community of Madison where she was raised by “Big Mama”, her grandmother, Rosa Smiley, but she also spent time with her parents and siblings. Willie Mae, affectionately called “Polly”, was a lifelong resident of this community.
Both parents and grandmother preceded Willie Mae in death.
Having grown up in a family where God was reverenced, and love was demonstrated, Willie Mae accepted Christ as her Savior early in life. She was baptized by faith and redeemed with a grateful heart. She became a member of Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church in the Lovett community of Greenville, Florida. She faithfully worshipped there for many years under the pastoral leadership of her father.
Polly blessed her family’s hearts with her unwavering faith, unconditional love, silent strength, and an indominable spirit. She did not have transportation, but she did not mind walking when rides were not accessible. She was a hard worker who provided for her children. She was employed by ITT Processing (Metal Products) and later worked in the culinary department at both Madison County Memorial Hospital and Madison Health and Rehabilitation Center.
A well-rounded person, Polly loved to sew, cook, and take care of her household responsibilities.
However, she believed in the importance of family and family time and always made time for her children. She wanted what was best for them and made sacrifices to ensure that they had the things they needed. She had an expectation of excellence and spoke that into their lives. She demonstrated her love for her children and was protective of them, but her grandchildren each managed to tap into her heart and soul.
Mother Willie Mae Washington fought the good fight of faith with breakthrough blessings, but on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, the Lord called her from labor to reward. Anchored in faith, she entered the glory of God.
Mother Willie Mae Washington’s legacy of love is left in the footprints of time. Her fulfillment of purpose shall continue through her family, friends, and countless lives she touched. Sharing her love and special memories are her loving daughters: Gloria Denise Washington of Madison, FL and Victoria Thompson of Orlando, FL; sons: Harold (Erlene) Washington of Townsend, MD and Alfred Dylan Washington Barfield of Madison, FL; sisters: Ella McCoy of Orlando, FL and Doris Edwards of Boynton Beach, FL; brother: Willie James (Nadie) Washington of Wilberforce, OH; grandchildren: Helen Washington, Lamar Washington, Gavin Washington, and Fiona Washington, Cynque Thompson, Jeffery Thompson, and Olivia Thompson; together with many other loving relatives and sorrowing friends.
