Obituary

Demarco Dupree Mosby was born April 16, 1989, to Terrance Mosby and Nichelle Robertson in Springfield, Illinois.

Demarco followed family tradition and gave his life to Christ at Union Baptist Church at an early age. Like aunts, uncles and cousins before him, Demarco served on the junior usher board and sang in the youth choir. Demarco had many reasons for going to church, not the least of which was to dress up in his suit and tie. If you knew Demarco, you know that his style and love for fashion radiated in technicolor. He also loved going to church because he got to spend time with his beloved Grandma Karen, with whom he lived during his formative years.

Demarco attended Springfield’s Southeast High School and took pride in being a Spartan. Even after graduating in 2008, he would often describe his high school years as the best time of his life. As a Spartan, Demarco’s big personality was always on full display. He loved everything about performing in show choir and on the cheer squad. He even made history at Southeast by becoming the first male member of the cheer squad. After high school, Demarco attended Grambling University in Louisiana.

Demarco delighted in family and loved spending time with his aunts, uncles, cousins, and siblings. He was especially close to his younger cousins, with whom he alternatively argued or played mentor, depending on the occasion.

Beyond family, Demarco loved children and advocated for those who couldn’t speak for themselves. His professional career as an elementary and high school dean was a testament to his unwavering commitment to helping students who faced challenges, particularly those whose home lives often contributed to social and emotional behaviors that made learning difficult.

Demarco firmly believed in the transformative power of education and called out threats where he saw them. In 2020, during the pandemic, Demarco discovered that some of his students were having to work to help their families instead of attending remote classes. Concerned for their future, he shared the issue in a feature story that was aired on Fox News.

Demarco leaves an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of those whose paths he crossed. He will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on through the lives he touched and the positive changes he instilled in the hearts of those he encountered.

Demarco departed this life on February 3, 2024, surrounded by family and friends, and he leaves a legacy of enduring love. May his soul find eternal peace, and may his family and friends find solace in the enduring legacy of love he leaves behind.

Demarco was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Karen Mosby and Sandra Johnson; grandfather, Benson Robertson, and great-grandmother, Dorothy Banks.

Demarco leaves to cherish his memory his parents, Terrence Mosby and Nichelle Robertson (Prentiss); grandfather, Robert Mosby (Marie); brothers, Prentiss “PJ” Robinson, Andre Robinson, Dayshon Mosby, and Tyler Mosby; brother-cousin, Brice Mosby (Tiffany); uncles, Curtis Mosby, Cortland Mosby, Sean Mosby (Joy), and Nu’man Robertson; aunts, Donetta Donlow, Wendy Jones, Monica Mosby, Liz Bryant (John), Nina Ball, Benandra Robinson (Bernard), and Marianna Robertson; nephew, Andre Robinson, niece Kahari Robinson, and a village of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
