Obituary

Howard R. Veal, Sr., 81, departed this life on June 12, 2024 at HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, IL.  He was born October 24, 1942 in Pocahontas, MS, the son of Melvina Tripp.

He was married to his beloved wife Elizabeth for 52 years.

Mr. Veal lived and worked a life of servant leadership exemplified by being a standard bearer for equality, justice, equity and freedom and human rights within his local community and beyond. He was the proud owner of H & J Lawn Service, a business started in partnership with his youngest son Jason. For decades he proudly, led the Springfield Urban League, he was an active member in his beloved fraternity Omega Psi Phi, he served numerous years on the Illinois Human Rights Commission, and was active over the years in multiple organizations that served the community like The Frontiers and Rotary International.

Mr. Veal was a longstanding member of Springfield’s oldest Black church, Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Since 1972 he proudly attended and served Zion in some capacity.

Mr. Veal was preceded in death by his mother Melvina Tripp, brother Clifton Veal, sisters Brenda Tripp, Vickie Tripp, & Daisy Hayes.

He leaves to cherish memories his wife Elizabeth, his son Jason and his wife Natoshia, his son Howard Jr. and his wife Shelli. Grandchildren: Kaitlin Veal, Parish Florence, Kylee Veal, Myles Veal, Maya Veal, Twaii Johnson, Cornelius Frazier, Nehemiah Dawson, Jeremiah Dawson, Kamella Veal and Kenya Veal. Great Grandchildren: Railyn Wallace, Arya Wallace, Kaiden Long & Maliyah Miller. Mr. Veal is also survived by three dear sisters and a brother: Debra Tipp, Linda Tripp, Sandra Tripp & Bernard Tripp. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews he adored.
