Obituary
Janie Mae Harris Young was born to Holloway Harris, Sr. and LeeDora Speller Harris on June 24, 1937, in Charleston, Missouri. She was the youngest of five children. Her husband, Dr. Charles Young, and siblings, Rosie Lee Hays, Luther Harris, Ernestine Smith, and Holloway Harris, Jr. preceded her in death.
Janie professed her hope in Christ at an early age at Fish Lake Baptist Church in Charleston, Missouri. She joined First Missionary Baptist Church after relocating to Mound City, Illinois. She graduated from Love Joy High School in Mound City, Illinois. After graduation, Janie worked as a secretary for Dr. A.L. Robinson for five years. She married schoolmate, the late Jesse A. Bryars in 1959. To this union, three daughters were born, JaDora, Jacquelyn, and Tammie.
In 1965, Janie moved to Springfield, Illinois, and joined Union Baptist Church where she faithfully served as the president of the Church Nurses and Visitation Guild for thirty years and vice president for four years. She served and was a member of the church choir and Missions Ministry. Janie held education in high regard. She attended Lincoln Land Community College.
In March 1990, she married the late Dr. Charles Young. The loving couple traveled extensively. Janie retired from the Illinois Secretary of State - Division of Safety and Financial Responsibility after thirty-five years of service. During this time, the State of Illinois celebrated her as the Employee of the Month in 1993 and Employee of the Year for Older Workers in 1994.
Janie was committed to community service. Her commitment to public service did not go unnoticed. In 2006, Janie was awarded Senior Citizen of the Year by the City of Springfield, Illinois. She volunteered in numerous service-based organizations. A small selection includes: past president and historian of the Frontiers International Council (Yoketts), president of Eastside Senior Citizens, Eastern Star, N.A.A.C.P, IMANI Contact Ministries, Red Cross, Ronald McDonald House, and District 186 Public Schools.
In her leisure, Janie enjoyed the company of her grandchildren, working out at the “Fit Club,” making floral arrangements, visiting the sick and shut-in, and walking and playing with her faithful companion and pet, Bashful.
To cherish her memory are: four daughters, Dr. JaDora Sailes Moore (Bernard) of Indianapolis, IN, Jacquelyn A. Bryars of Atlanta, GA, Tammie Bolden of Springfield, IL, and Sybil “Kim” Goza of Springfield, IL; grandsons, Nevon Bolden (Michelle), Alex Goza, Dwight Bolden II (Jazlen), Grant Sailes, and William Sailes; granddaughter, Serena Bolden; great-grandchildren, Darius Herman, Nariah Bolden, Nakira Bolden, and Asher Bolden; special sister-in-law, Debra Bryars; a host of “favorite” nieces and nephews; and Godchildren, Bernice Richie, Michael Tribbet, Isaac Robinson, and Indya Thompson.
