Obituary
Jesse Hayes, Jr., 78, departed this life for eternity on Tuesday, April 1, 2025. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, whose life was a testament to love, service, and faith. Born on April 19, 1946, in Decatur, Illinois, Jesse was the son of Jesse Hayes, Sr., and Dorothy (Willett) Hayes. He grew up surrounded by a loving family who cultivated a strong work ethic that would shape his future.
In September of 1979, Jesse met Frances Austin, and on August 27, 1989, he united in marriage with Frances in Springfield, Illinois. Their enduring bond of 46 years was characterized by love, commitment, and mutual support. Jesse’s life was dedicated to helping others, leading him to a fulfilling career as a Certified Nursing Assistant. His compassion and dedication made a profound impact on the lives he touched, embodying the spirit of service throughout his professional journey.
In 2008, Jesse rededicated his life to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, joining the Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church. His faith became a central part of his life, guiding him and enriching the lives of those around him within the church community.
Jesse leaves behind a rich legacy of love and inspiration. He is survived by his devoted wife, Frances Hayes, and their cherished children: Malika Hayes of Douglas, Georgia; Mecca Hayes; Jesse Hayes II; Calvin Austin; Larry (Christa) Austin; Yenetta (Eric) Tolefree; and Maxine Austin, all of Springfield, Illinois. He is also survived by his brother, Larry (Mamie) Hayes of Decatur, and his sisters: Toni Rawls; Ora Jelks; and Dorothy (Charles) Bates, all of Decatur, Illinois, and Shirley (Richard) Montgomery of Gardena, California.
He shared a deep bond with his beloved granddaughters, Anijhai Austin and Trenetta Ross, who were raised like his daughters. Jesse’s eyes would light up when Renetta Tolefree or Sahrenity Beyah came into the room. Jesse was also the proud grandfather of nineteen grandchildren and twenty-nine great-grandchildren, along with a host of nieces and nephews who will carry his memory forward.
Jesse was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Dorothy Hayes, and one daughter, Robin Davis. While he will be deeply missed, his spirit and the love he shared will continue to resonate in the lives of those he left behind.
As we gather to honor Jesse’s remarkable life, let us remember him not only for the legacy he leaves but for the light he brought into our lives. His faith, kindness, and devotion to family will forever inspire us to live with the same spirit of love and service that he exemplified throughout his life.
