Obituary
John H. Smith, 92, of Rochester, Illinois, formerly of Riverton, passed away on June 13, 2025. Born on January 28, 1933, in Springfield, Illinois, John lived a full and vibrant life rooted in love, family, service, and the great outdoors.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, John brought that same dedication to his work, retiring from CILCO as a respected gas crew leader and welder. He served many years as a contract negotiator for the IBEW Local 51. He was a past president of the 38 Club, a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles 4361, a 33rd degree Mason, and a Scottish Rite—always finding purpose in community and camaraderie.
John was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 70 years, Norma, and his son-in-law, Gene Woodson. He is survived by four children: Debbie Woodson, John Smith (Lynn), Rick Smith (Kathy), and Julie Smith (Eileen Simpson); eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
John and Norma shared a deep love and many adventures—especially at their camper on Otter Lake and their second home in Leesburg, Florida. He had a true appreciation for nature and spent countless joyful days fishing, hunting, camping, golfing, and mushroom hunting. When not outdoors, John could be found bowling, playing cards with friends and family, or cheering on his favorite team—the Fighting Illini.
John was well known for his sharp wit, playful spirit, and legendary sense of humor. He loved pulling practical jokes and bringing laughter to those around him, always ready with a mischievous grin and a clever one-liner. His ability to make people smile was one of his greatest gifts.
Above all, John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend who will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
As we celebrate his life, may we carry forward John’s warmth, laughter, and love for life’s simple pleasures.
