Obituary

Lorene “Deanie” Amanda Lewis passed away February 5, 2024 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Illinois at the age of 84.

Lorene was born June 26, 1939 in Wardell, Missouri, the daughter of Annie (Brooks) Reed and Samuel Reed.  She graduated from Attucks High School in Carbondale, Illinois and was a proud member of the “Spirit of Attucks.” With an accomplished career, she earned her master’s degree and was committed to lifelong learning and growth.

Throughout 61 years of marriage, Ernest and Lorene navigated life’s joys and challenges together, building a foundation rooted in love, respect, and unwavering support.  Lorene was a pillar of strength sculpting the lives of her four children and instilling values that will resonate for generations.   Lorene’s love for her granddaughter Destiny was a source of joy and strength with an immense pride, delight, and laughter.  She was a matriarch and played a pivotal role in shaping the bonds that connected generations.

Lorene devoted her career to making a difference working tirelessly as a social working and teacher.  She championed the cause of those facing adversity and became a beacon of knowledge and inspiration.

Lorene celebrated a life enriched by a profound love for reading, gardening, cooking and the appreciation of antiques.

Lorene was preceded in death by her mother Annie (Brooks) Reed and father Samuel Reed; sisters, Virginia Nesbitt, Geneva Anderson and Florence English; and brothers, Johnnie Washington Reed and Glen Reed.

Lorene leaves to cherish memories with her beloved  husband of 61 years, Ernest Lewis of Springfield; sons, Ranay Lewis of Springfield, Callison Lewis of Springfield, and Patrick Lewis of Evanston; daughter, Starlin Lewis of Springfield; granddaughter, Destiny Lewis of Springfield; sisters, Elizabeth Harvell of Springfield and Annie (Raymond) Ampy of Carbondale; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
