Obituary
Thomas William Hughes, 90, departed this life on Sunday, June 11, 2023 at Memorial Medical Center. He was born on October 26, 1932, in Springfield, Illinois, to Inez Hughes (Scroggins) and Joseph Hughes, Sr. He graduated from Feitshans High School in Springfield, Illinois, in 1951.
He married Patricia L. Day on June 11, 1955. Thomas was a beloved husband, father, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a veteran. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and retired from the Air Force. He also retired from SIU School of Medicine.
Thomas loved his family. He loved listening to jazz music. He loved watching sports. He loved thrift-shopping and researching his ancestry. Thomas never met a stranger. He loved to talk. His favorite salutation was, “See you on campus.”
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Patricia; parents, Joseph Sr., and Inez Hughes; brothers, Joseph, Jr., Edgar, and George; and sister, Margaret Wilkins.
He leaves to cherish his memories: son, Derek (Colette); daughters, Vanessa Wright (Kenny), Korbi Young (Stanley), and Daylene Craig (Michael); nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, and other family members and friends.
