Obituary

Velma Jean Alexander, 80, of Springfield, Illinois, peacefully transitioned on Friday, April 12, 2024, at Memorial Hospital in Springfield, Illinois. She was born on November 9, 1943, in Birmingham, Alabama, to the late Mabel Wazell Allen and Benjamin Lewis Alexander. Velma attended Centralia High School and graduated in 1961. At an early age, Velma confessed her faith in Christ. She was a faithful member of Northside Church of Christ.

Velma worked for many years at St John’s Hospital as a Cardiovascular Tech. She later went to work for the family business Lasley Disposal as an administrative assistant until 2004. She also worked several years at Memorial Hospital as an operator before leaving in 2007. Velma was a compassionate person and loved to help others in any way that she could. This led her to accept a position at Sparc. She was a dedicated employee and in 2009 received the Experience Works Champion Award. Velma retired from Sparc in 2013.

Velma loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them. She liked to cook. She loved fellowshipping with her church family and going to church to wear her hats. She spoke words of wisdom to all she met. She loved to watch Westerns on Saturdays and was a fan of the Golden State Warriors, but mainly Steph Curry.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mabel Wazell Lasley, Benjamin Lewis Alexander, and stepfather Owen T. Lasley; aunts, Johngylene Stewart and Alicia Jackson; and uncle, Ulysses Allen.

Velma’s memory will forever be cherished by: her brother, Fontaine Lasley (Rebecca); two daughters, Sherita Alexander of Springfield, IL, and Valerie Mays of Dixon, IL; sons, Terence Mays of Springfield, IL, Victor Mays, Sr. (Linda), of Springfield, IL; grandchildren, Terra Curtis-Trumbo (Wes) of Springfield, IL, Ashleigh Williams (George) of Schererville, IN, Victor Mays, Jr. (Kendall), of Springfield, IL, Briana Gaines of Clarksville, TN, and Terin Mays; great-grandchildren, Jayden, Laila, Terrion, Nile, Victor Mays III, Alana, and Nolan; special daughters, Lisa Brooks and Terri Wilson; and special caregiver, Annette Jones.
